Whitewater and touring

Switzerland

Postby The Drowned Fish » Sun Jul 15, 2012 9:12 pm

So I've got a week (from next weekend) to go paddling somewhere in Europe before meeting up with my club in Landeck for a week there of Austrian boating.

I was thinking about spending it in Switzerland, good idea? I've taken a look at http://www.rivermaps.ch and taken a quick read through the North Alps guidebook. Anyone got any other tips and ideas that might be of use?

Cheers

Hi Simon - the upper-Rhone, Upper-Rhine and Upper-Inn areas are all working really nicely right now as there was excellent winter snow cover in all of these areas. If you fancy a paddle in the Upper-Rhone area give me a shout as should be around for a bit of boating next week!

Excellent. Upper Rhone was what I was thinking then moving towards Austria as the week goes on.

We'll be getting out there on Monday I'll PM you my mobile number if you fancy meeting up.

Cheers

I had a great week paddling the Upper Rhine area at the start of June, levels were good to high. The Glenner was very high one day and was great fun. The upper Medelsbach (put in on the Christalina) was great but the too high for the gorge (for us anyways). The sumvixerrhine is well worth the effort of the 3km walkin with very steep grade 4+/5- as the reward. We were very lucky to get the Shinschlucht on the Albula with water in it, normally the HEP takes all the water out. The landquart was too high (6ft higher than Pete Bandtock had seen before).

There is loads more in the other runs section of WW North Alps including the Upper Glenner and the Valserrhine which we didn't manage in our week.

There are some photos of the trip on my website here http://richardlonghurst.co.uk/image/2012_swiss_kayak/index.html
