IAD "Rules"

Postby AlexC » Sat May 26, 2012 3:36 pm

I've got to that stage in life where I don't get out on many adventures so when I do I like to make them good ones. I've got this urge to try to cycle the West Highland Way in a day but think it would be too much for a calendar day and was wondering what people's thoughts were on what constitutes a proper IAD mission? I seem to remember Rich (?) someone doing multiple Dart trips within 24 hours but don't think it was within the same calendar day. I've done 100 rock climbs in a day and a few bike tons but obviously off road is a lot harder so I'm thinking of trying to make it easier by having a bit of a kip in between two 8 hour sessions. Start at 3pm , bike for 8 hours, sleep for 7 hours then 8 hours more biking the next day.

So what's the rules? Is it ok to go for a 24 hr session or does it really need to be a calendar day?

* 1 hour faff obviously

I would have thought it was simply within 24 hours. You get plenty of people doing stuff like the 3 peaks, or Lyke Wake walk who prefer to start in the evening, so they don't get roasted all day.... dehydrated... etc. On these walks it is normal to include a few hours sleep.

On the full 3 peaks (Snowdon, Scafell Pike, Ben Nevis) I guess the people sleep in the car journeys.

On the Cumbrian 3 peaks I did a year ago, we only just did them all (Scafell Pike, Helvellyn, Skiddaw), as in only just got down in the same calendar day we set off. Set off at the bottom of Scafell at about 6am and due to fog on the descent of Scafell set off up Helvellyn at 3pm, then set off up Skiddaw at about 8pm down by 11:30pm.

Back on topic: my definition of IAD is one 24hr period. The MET office definition of IAD is 9am to 9am. Opinions really.

I take all the above on board but I must add that in paddling terms we often mean one calendar day.
If someone told you they'd done a Dartmoor triple crown (three hard sections "in a day") and you'd then discovered they'd done two after lunch one day and the third at breakfast the next day you'd start to question their understanding of the phrase 'in a day'.
