Making Splits

Postby Squirrel » Wed May 16, 2012 9:06 pm

After my paddles snapped in half on the Upper Dart, am keen to make some splits. Any ideas on where I could buy a 2pc or 4 piece shaft? Also- anyone done this before who has any tips they'd be most welcome.

Derf - I think you can buy shafts-only direct from Lendal.

Give Performance kayaks a call, they stock Streamlyte paddles, and Streamlyte make a (spigot and pin) kit to do just what you want. (approx £10)

You need to measure, accurately, the inside shaft measurement. You'll probably have to cut your current shaft a couple of inches either side of the split. Would turn 197cm paddles into 192cm splits! So you might want to source a section of shaft to add (upto about 3/4cm should still allow the spigot a good bond section). If you fit an expansion locking system like the lendal paddlock then you might want to wrap a layer of resin/tape (Or brass/alloy scarf) around the join to add strength.

I turned my old Pogos into 3 piece splits using some PVC piping and epoxy glue I had lying around. Worked fine!

I have just found this write-up, which might provide some useful information on making splits:
