One interesting thing about that story is that it emphasises the high financial costs of avoidable call-outs.

Sounds like this was not EPIRB, but a VHF fitted with DSC, which gives the option of 1 button press to summons help via the DSC system.

Does DSC not give a location fix? Seems strange that no one noticed the scene of the accident was half way up someone's driveway. Unless of course they saw this but put it down to some kind of malfunction.

DSC also offers the ability to send and receive GPS positions - all DSC radios can be connected to a GPS receiver.

What a huge waste of volunteers' time and resources. DSC will only transmit the coords of a vessel if it is connected to a working GSP system. If the VHF is on but not receiving the GSP informaiton, it sounds a loud warning alarm that someone must have heard.
For anyone with an EPIRB, PLB, VHF, etc the Coastguard scheme is worth a look. http://www.dft.gov.uk/mca/mcga07-home/e ... e/cg66.htm
