Getting Smutty in the Solent

Getting Smutty in the Solent

Postby The Shiner » Mon May 07, 2012 3:15 pm

Met up with 5 other Kayak anglers at Hill Head yesterday.

The plan for the day was getting some Smut action (Smooth Hound).
I only had a five hour window to get out, catch what I wanted and then get back (If I was late I would not only be facing the wrath of the missus, but also my mother! Lol)

It was a chilly northely wind, less than Saturday but still cold.

We all managed to catch the target species, some of the other guys also got some other species (Whiting, Pouting & Dogfish).

A great day out, although chilly.
Met some new faces, and caught up with some old ones.

Some pics...

A Starry Smooth Hound.
The one in picture 5 is a Common Smooth Hound.
Both were females, approx 6Ib (maybe 7?).

They are a member of the Shark family, but don't any teeth.
You have to be a little cautious at first and check it's mouth before you do anything, a couple of guys I know have had small Tope in the Solent (and they DO have teeth).

I love catching these, they fight like mad and are truely gorgeous.

I had one last year there estimated to around 11 or 12Ib, that was a fantastic night! It was towing me around, and made quite a few runs...
