Morriston Dam release on tuesday?

Postby jonh1140 » Sun May 06, 2012 4:57 pm

Myself and some friends are planning on doing the morriston this coming tuesday but we're concerned that the Morriston river race might change the dates around a bit. We don't want to drive a long way for nothing so does anyone know for sure if it's releasing or not?

All the details can be found on the SCA website, here: http://www.canoescotland.org/Recreation ... eases.aspx

It appears that it will be releasing, the MRR took the 1st May release. However, that is just my reading of the text.....
from the SCA website which is taken from the SEPA freshet agreement wrote:Moriston (Dundreggan Dam)

Freshet Season: 1st May - 31st October
Frequency: Once per week
Timings: 1200 Tuesday until 1700 Wednesday

EXCEPT for the following two dates:
Moriston River Race: Sunday 6th May: 0800 Sunday until 1300 on Monday (replacing Tuesday 1st May)
Wet West Paddlefest: Saturday 1st September: 0800 Saturday until 1300 Sunday (replacing Tuesday 28th August)

I'll be having my first a bash at the Moriston in June. We were planning to paddle it all day Wednesday, but we've heard from some that it's low on a Weds, and drops off loads from midday onwards - is this right as I got the impression from the link above that it releases 1200 Tuesday until 1700 Wednesday?

I thought it was noon to noon but I doubt they just turn it all off so probably is paddleable until 5pm...

Normally good and high on tuesday evening - my impression in the past was that it was lower on the wednesday morning and dropping. Guess this'll depend on how much water they've got in the reservoir.

The SCA website says every Tuesday except the 1st May. It just seems a bit weird to release Sunday-Monday (instead of Tuesday 1st) and then again Tuesday-Wednesday. Even if the Loch levels are low will they still release?

The SCA site, taken from SEPA information says that it is every Tuesday except the 1st May and 28th August. Both releases are specifically there for events, the Moriston River Race and Wet West Paddlefest respectively.

These are scheduled freshet releases, so they will always happen unless there is a massive water shortage. They are there primarily for environmental reasons (fish). If this did happen, the hydro companies would contact SEPA (Scottish Environmental Protection Agency) and negotiate the suspension of releases.

It did release today, although was still a little low so maybe not a full one? Barely anyone about though.

Ran the upper and lower today (Weds) and it was on its normal release.

Dame released so switches off at 5pm Wednesday normally I think.

Starts 12 mid day Tuesday finishes 5pm Wednesday. We thinks it is at it's best Wednesday morning. We were told by the chappy that releases this water that one important reason for doing this is to help the salmon come up river.

was there yesterday. remarkably only the 2 of us from edinburgh and a group of 3 from inverness all evening. Was glorious sunshine almost all evening, no midges and the release was actually a bit bigger than normal which made it even better. One or 2 of the rockly bits were cleaner, then hole on the gunbarrel was significantly bigger and everything was just a hint more interesting without really being any harder.

Well worth thr drive, not sure why it was so quiet.
