Shred Ready Standard

Postby chrisps » Sun Apr 15, 2012 8:52 pm

I currently have a Rocker full cut, but am wanting to get a full face for certain creeks as I am sure that I am going to face plant sooner or later and it probably wont end well!

I was originally going to just buy a Sweet Rocker full face... untill I saw the price! Seems you pay an awful lot for a little bit of extra plastic around the chin!

Anyway, I have been looking at the SR Standard which is an awful lot cheaper, but I am wondering how good it actually is at protecting you.

This thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=86398&p=611763&hilit=shred+ready#p611763 has a chap saying that he trusts it, but has anyone actually taken an impact in it? How does it hold up compared to the tri-layer carbon of the Sweet? I would prefer not to pay the massive price for the Sweet, but also only have one head, so dont want something which wont take a beating appropriately!

Thanks :)

Sweet have a big sale on their ski lids. I got this last summer - yes it's still expensive, but I couldn't resist how badass it looks.

Awesome! Thanks for the tip! I presume that as far as you can tell, the Trooper fullface is the same as the Rocker fullface in the same way that my Rocker actually has Trooper printed on the inside?

Yep - the only real difference is the goggle clip (compared to my rocker fullcut, trooper halfcut and mate's rocker fullface). Quite a few people in my club are paddling with the ski lids now.

I know a friend who head ruddered down a beck in the lake district. Says he was glad that he had a sr full face.

Does that mean that if I buy a rambler and use it for both kayaking and skiing it will keep me just as safe as a wanderer? (and vice versa although would rather have the rambler for the goggle clip)

I emailed sweet last night about this and got this response this morning

Sweet Protection wrote:Hi David,

Thanks for the mail.

All our “snow” helmets are tested and certified to meet the CE/EN 1077 standard, which is the European norm for ski/snowboard helmets. The kayaking helmets are tested and certified to meet the CE/EN 1385 standard, which is the European whitewater helmet standard. The 1077 test exceeds the 1385 test by far. Both 1077 and 1385 test includes side, front, rear and top impact testing.

The criteria's and ways of testing is substantially different between the two standards. The main difference is that the impact speed is far greater at the 1077 test, and this test also requires the same test results between +25 degrees Celsius as in minus 25 degrees Celsius. The 1385 standard only requires performance in the range +25 until 0 degrees Celsius.

In general we would recommend that you buy a ski helmet for skiing, and a kayaking helmet for kayaking. If you are in the market for only one helmet to cover both seasons, we would absolutely recommend that you choose a 1077 (ski/snb) approved helmet and use this also for kayaking.

I hope this helped!
Cheers,

So basically, buy the ski/snowboard version and use it for both kayaking and skiing (They're also a bit cheaper just now as its out of season :))

Thanks for all the info guys; really useful.

Decided to go with one of Sweet's reduced Troopers in the end as I have always trusted my Rocker and the reduction meant that it was an acceptable price in my books!

Thanks!

Cool. What colour did you get? I've really enjoyed being the only paddler with a badass green and pink combo...
