Thanks for the link to this book Mark. I have been Ski Touring in many parts of Norway over the last 15 or so years and started Sea Kayaking in the last few years (a convert from Open boating) with Norway high on my paddling 'To Do' list I ordered the book immediately……... I now refer to reading it as 'studying my retirement plan'!

I have only got through part of the Ski sections so far but it is very readable with a mix of his experiences good and bad really well expressed with bits of interesting culture and history and some great pictures. Its written well but not too 'polished' so its more like a guy in the pub who is a good story teller telling you about his day (although I'm sure the writer hasn't exaggerated like some guys in the pub do!). It’s a good honest account of the journey with admissions of mistakes with navigation and route choice when they happen (as they do), lovely descriptions of just how wonderful skiing in the Norwegian mountains can be when the sun shines ……. and just how bad it can be skiing in a white out and strong winds.

I imagine the Sea Kayak return journey will be equally as good when I get to it and like the Ski section useful as an aid to trip planning as well as a delightful arm chair read. As its written in sections of around a week it should be useful for those who haven't got 8 months (4 months Ski North, 4 months Kayak South) to pick out the best bits for a week or so. Roll on retirement!!

I've met James, very nice guy and, as has been said, some great photography. I hope his book does well- must get myself a copy.

Im sure James could send any pictures you wanted larger copies of or, if there was enough interest, maybe load them all to a website somewhere.

I dont know if there are any contact details in the book but I can pass on the link to this thread to James if this is of any benefit ?

All very tempting and inspiring stuff but oh so cruel since, as far as I know, there is no longer a direct ferry route from UK to Norway.

Don’t these ferry operators realise just how many UK kayakers there are just waiting for a chance to enjoy Norway?

I e mailed Dfds as I found some info on them taking non freight passengers on the Immingham to Brevik route and got confirmation they do - time is a bit unsociable and Brevik is right down the south of Norway but it is direct - I have no idea of costs etc as no immediate plans to go yet but if anyone is interested this is the reply - let us know if you use it.

Yes we do take a limited number of passengers on our freight ferry from Immingham to Brevik in Norway on a Sunday sailing at 05.00 hrs if you require a quote for this service you will need to complete the attached booking form and return it to imm-norbookings@dfds.com about 8 x weeks before you wish to sail
