Hip pain
So I have a new boat a Karnarli with the connect 30 outfitting, it as to replace my G3 as ii found that it gave me hip pain after 30 minutes or so, as far as I can make out I have the Karnali setup as well as possible but it still gives me hip pain.
Any advice would be great im thinking maybe some better support around my hips as well as the hip pads which I already have fitted
thanks

Re: Hip pain
I hate to ask the obvious but do you get this hip pain if you don't have the hip pads in?
Have you got the hip pads in the right way around?
Try moving the hip pads so they have less pressure on you or remove any foam inserts that are within the pads as it sounds like you are too snug in your boat.

Re: Hip pain
I have previously had hip pain that was deferred from my back (although not in a boat yet), so could yours be a back problem?

Re: Hip pain
The thigh braces on Pyranhas can also be moved. Try moving them forward slightly as this may reduce the pressure on your hips as you legs won't be forced so wide.

Re: Hip pain
Can also try sticking foam on the inside to move your knees further together - under each knee.
I cannot sit in the new wide and high boats without hip problems and found that moving my knees inwards and inch or two helps fix this.

Re: Hip pain
Hi
I get hip pain no matter the boat - I have found that it is down to using a muscle I dont very much in my other sports. If the pain runs directly down the front of your hip and tends to hurt after "messing around in holes" and such like, it may be a tight hip flexor muscle which just needs warming up and stretching properly.

Have you took a hit on it recently? I found that after a fall while mountain biking resulted in me getting Bursitis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_tr ... n_syndrome). I find that it is sorer when I use my hip alot or it is leaning against something (i.e. lying in bed, sitting in a kayak)

Re: Hip pain
I'm sure there was a post on here about this a year or so ago. I think the outcome was that it was deferred pain from awkward foot angle.
Either way it'll most likely be down to the padding and outfitting and just needs loads of fiddling with.

Re: Hip pain
No big hits or similar, I get pain in my right hipafter extended walking trips 15-20 miles, I also used to get shin splints and plantia facia, ive since moved to new footwea wrhich has helped a lot. maybe just the angles im twisting things at, im not the smallest or lightest of chaps.
I foumd am old roll mat in the garage so im going to try new / different padding and see what happens.

Re: Hip pain
I'm getting serious hip pain in my connect 30 Molan, tried removing the hip pads as I was very snug with them in and after 20 mins it was back again.
Not sure its the outfitting as such, I spend a lot of time in Burns and Ammos and have never had this problem, must be the angle of my legs in the boat, not sure its that much different to a superstar or Gforce though.

Hi Mike
I've got a karnali L that I've had for about 6 months now , I also have alot of trouble with my back but I have managed to get myself comfortable in the kayak. Mine came with the rapid spec but I've added to it so that I'm comfortable. I've got a 'skwoosh' seat pad ( that has gel packs to releive pressure ) , some thin foam for my hips ( that came with the wifes dagger ) that just touches - almost no pressure , adjusted the thigh braces while I was sitting in it , and a peice of of foam in a upside down 'V' shape under my heels ( this helps with the angle of my feet ) plus some on the footplate .
I'm 6 ft 2" and about 14 stn and can sit in it for at least 4 - 5 hours and be comfortable ( did this earlier in the year ) although do have to move my feet around every once and a while when they go numb. I found getting the thigh brace right and the peice under my heels was the most telling as regards to comfort. I found some of this out searching online for - kayak outfitting - and a bit of trial and error.

Re: Hip pain
so I spent the afternoon messing around with bits of foam and moving the hip and thigh pads around, I found an extra bit of padding for my bum has helped a lot plus it seems that I need to pack out the gap between my knees and the outside of the boat to stop my legs spreading so far.
its almost like the seat needs to go forward move than the adjustment allows for me to get the most confort on the thigh braces, I removed the extra foam in thoe hip pads which helped a lot.
It seems like an improvement but I wont really know until its been on the water.
thanks for all the help so far,

Re: Hip pain
Hi Mike,
If the pain persists and you can't sort it by changing the outfitting / position in the boat, do get checked out by a specialist. Don't do what I did and just put up with it. After two years of doing that, I finally got checked out and found that I had well established arthritis in both hips. I'm currently recovering from my second hip operation. By the time I get
back to paddling, I will have been laid off for over a year. If you do need treatment, the earlier you have it done the better.
Good luck !
Ian

I had a simliar event. Put up with it, put up with it, couldn't stand up properly, put up wi....well you get the idea.
Anyway, turned out to be a ruptured disk, which has now left me with having to ditch the kayak for a canoe (no disrespect here, I dont mean it to sound like a lesser craft, I actually prefer it) and left me unable to get into a Kayak for anything more that a few minutes.
Good luck whichever route you go down!

Re: Hip pain
Have you tried getting fitter - do stretching or core work - as this will help anyway. I have been doing sit-ups to help with snowboarding, I can't get up to heel slide !
I have found it helps when I twist round to see kids behind me paddling now. I can now turn round further.
Maybe also buy a cheap gel seat cover form lidls etc and this may help.
