Hi there
Ive been bought a Silva 70UNE compass as gift and im going to make a bracket to fit it into the existing compass recess.
I am looking for the 70p bolt spacing if possible, or however much detail you would like to go into, LxW of the "square bit", hole pitch diagonally and horizontal/vertical.
My thought is to drill the boat for a 70p and fit my bracket/70une assembly to it, meaning that if I ever sell the boat a 70p can fitted using the existing holes.
Tried google but couldnt find anything :(
thanks Neil

Hi Neil,
I attached the supplied bracket to the front hatch cover, which I have found to be very satifactory. It saves drilling the boat & is very quick to do. Also you can use your compass on another boat if the hatch covers are compatable.

Re: Dimensions of a Silva 70p?

9.4 cms square.
The centres of the screws are 1 cm in from sides.
As a cross-check, the centres are 10.4 on the diagonal.
I guess if you could accurately scale the picture you could use it as a template / double check those measurements. Another thought would be to ask a kind retailer to photocopy the fitting template??
Hope this helps. Mike.

Hi Mike,
Thats great thanks very much :D, Ive CAD here so ill draw it out and have access to a waterjet cutter to make it :D
I was tempted to mount it to the Fwd hatch cover but I was worried it might move, is the aligment with the centerline on the boat important?

I have a template you can have. Let me know if you would like me to post it. Or I could scan it and email it.

Thanks for the kind offer james but I should be fine with the dimensions.
wonder if scanning it and posting it as picture would be breach of copyright?

In truth, the forward hatch cover would be fine - I've done something similar in the past. In terms of alignment, yes getting it lined up with the centreline is a good idea of course, but the reality is that if the cover is oval, it's going to line up easily anyway. Even it its a round cover, there will be some form of mark you can use. If not, make some.
You're not going to get pinpoint accuracy anyway at sea, and given the compass is marked out in 5 degree chunks, you've got a big margin for error in comparison to a hand-held compass used on land.
Hope this helps - Mike.
Ps : I'm in no way envious of your being able to access a waterjet!!!

Anyone got the size and depth of the dimple the Silva fits into?
I'm fabricating a new hatch surround and its not too late to incorporate one!
