Smoke on the water...

Postby snapper » Sat Feb 11, 2012 12:22 pm

I'm starting to get fed up with my fag packets getting soggy and coming apart, my fags getting damp or wet and my match heads falling off. This is not to mention my lighter wheel gettingw et from being spun with damp fingers and refusing to light. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a way to carry my fags that is easily and speedily accessible, fits inside a small pocket but bone-dry waterproof. I currently keep a lighter or matches in my hat (this works well when I decide to stay upright) and my fags in the upper chest pocket on my PS220 drysuit. NB drybags won't do the business.

See now back when I was a squaddie I found a solution for normal, land situations of having additional field dressing pouches sewn onto the upper arms of my custome combat smock, these allowed me to lie in mud all day long without crushging them or getting them wet with tobacco tins keeping the rain out but these weren't waterproof, merely resistant.

Any ideas?

How about a small peli case, or for that matter a small fishing lure/fly box - many of those now come waterproof - or something very close to it - rubber gaskets and all, in something like 3X5X1".. example: http://www.fluer.dk/produkter-fiskegrej ... -foamfoam/

For the lighter, how about a storm lighter, they can get pretty damp, but still works..

YMMV

Why not a BiOrb with some double sided tape on the cigs and have them postioned within reach of your mouth, you,ll stay dry not sure about how to light them I,ll ponder on that one.

What about one of these?
Might only be able to fit a ten pack and a lighter (its the one at the bottom of the page) - http://www.crewsaver.co.uk/Crewsaver/Crewsaver_Leisure_Products/index.html?catid=43

I use one for my keys.

Not sure on the lighter though?

Yeah, that would work Rich...10 is enough at a time and hanging around the neck keeps things out of my pockets.

Storm lighters area good option so cheers for that Ulrik.

Thanks everyone so far. I have the overboard dry bag but it's not the right tool for the job, as excellent as it is.

Any advance?

Its a long time since I smoked but I used to use a simple tupperware box and zippo. I left a bar towel in the box to dry my hands and then light up. It worked for me for a good 10 years, so cant see why it would not work now.

Hi Snapper,
As a dedicated addict I have found that the best solution is the following..............
A- Go to any supermarket cake making aisle and buy a jar of Dr. Oetker cake decorations (about 90p).
B- eat aforementioned decorations.
This leaves you with a 100% waterproof plastic jar which will hold 5 kingsize plus a disposable lighter.
Carry as many of them as you like! Extra buoyancy as a side benefit!
The disposable lighter must be the electronic push down to light type, wheels are no use.
You can tip a cig from the bottle straight into your mouth............only until you give up of course.
Cheers, Murray.

That sounds really good but a German company with a Brazilian side? I could be funding the rise of the fourth reich inadvertently and that would be really bad. Mind you, it might see us out of recession.

Really cheap dry boxes are Morrisons "click" boxes, they come in all sizes and have a built in gasket in the lid. I have a small box for first aid kit and a larger one for food. Despite numerous swims they have not leaked yet.

They've got a site in Sao Paulo, been there since 1954. Sounds fishy to me. Mind you, at least they aren't Swiss.

Nor did I. I had to google them to make sure they weren't Swiss before I went to Asda to solve the problem- I have nothing against Germans so that wouldn't have been a problem but having seen 'The Boys from Brazil' I am feeling a bit wary.

You need to learn how to do rollies mate.

Wrap a few up and put them in the placcy baccy bag supplied. Chuck in a clipper (they seem to do best in the damp, or one of those jet lighters, I guess). Put that lot inside a small Exped d.bag and fix to the deck. Works for me. For straights I use those cheap cylinder things (bright plastic with a screw top - funnily enough I don't have an archive pic.) that you get everywhere on the Sunshine coast.

I much prefer rolling a fag I know rather than sucking on some non-descript straight!

Drysuit sleeve is a good idea...

I can roll fags Tim, just not kayaks, but with baiting up etc my hands are wet pretty much all the time I'm out. however that screw top thing of which you speak is something I have kicking around - I use one for cable ties for the anchor. From memory they only take 3 or though. I'll check when I get back, just off out now...-7, 15mph westerly, snowing...gonna be fun sparking up in that!

Ziploc freezer bag. I put my tobacco papers and lighter in one. Survived a full dunking and came out bone dry. Was in the water for 10 mins. Cheap and easy.

Worked it out over the weekend BiOrb over your head and the fags double sided tape within reach the answer is chain smoking light one then continue untill you run out of fags, complete the paddle or die, forgot to mention remove the cover where the light is fitted and cut out more of a hole to get it over your head, good luck.

Can't help with the baccy (I think were I afflicted this problem would annoy me into quitting), but for a waterproof lighter, try a hand held flare, wind and waterproof, and lasts a good few seconds to give you have chance of actually getting your fag to it and alight.

(note: this is a joke, do not stick your face anywhere near a flare, they are bad enough at arms length)

Have you considered a pipe? they seem to work by being out most of the time.... plus they add a whole host of new associated habits to form, cleaning and packing the pipe.

+ 1 - I rolled my capella about 3 or four times one day, completely forgetting the plastic pouch with the fags and lighter were in my PFD pocket. It was all bone dry when I took it out, tho. Clicky lighters with the electric spark don't suffer from wet wheel syndrome.

I am trying to work out if there is a Typo in that or not ?

For me on Rivers I dont smoke on them or need to on a 2 - 4 hour trip so I dont bring, I do make sure my baccy is at the bottom though,

Sea paddling again I dont smoke on the water but will bring with me, normaly my Baccy pouch is thrown into a small dry bag witha towell since getting my hands dry enough to roll is a bit of a pain ( grainted I should pre roll, but wheres the fun in that)

all that been said after 10 odd years of the wife at me about quiting I am in the process of going cold turkey and I am not engoying the experance at all,
