A few Cumbrian lighthouses.

Image
Whitehaven. Hard to believe that this tiny port was once second only to London in the tonnage of goods it handled. It was also the scene of a bizarre American invasion attempt in 1778. John Paul Jones, a Scot who had various dubious adventures in the British merchant navy led the attempt and planned to set fire to, and sink all of the coal and merchant ships in Whitehaven’s harbour at night. Wind and tide caused them some trouble even getting to the harbour. Then they couldn’t manage to set fire to any of the ships as their lanterns had run out of fuel. Some of the party were sent to raid a public house on the quay but it seems that they eventually came back rather drunk just before dawn. It all ended rather farcically when the local townspeople were finally alerted and forced the American party to retreat when they had only managed to set fire to a couple of ships.

Image
St Bees, sitting well back from the cliff edge. You can only really see it by paddling some distance out to sea.

Image
South Walney, whose claim to fame is for having the first woman Principal (as opposed to assistant) keeper in the UK. Can anyone confirm whether this is correct?

Image
This one, known as The Needle is at Rampside, south of Barrow. It is the only survivor of thirteen lights built from 1850-1870 to guard the approaches to Rampside and Barrow.

Image
Not really a lighthouse. The Sir John Barrow monument above Ulverston seen from the River Leven estuary. Sir John Barrow was born in Ulverston and became Second Secretary to the Admiralty and a polar explorer. The monument is based on the third Eddystone lighthouse. The admiralty contributed to the costs as the monument could also be used as a seamark for shipping coming into the Leven estuary and Ulverston canal. It was undergoing restoration here but is now fully restored.

Image
Hodbarrow, built and operated privately for shipping serving the iron ore mines beside the River Duddon estuary. The mines are long abandoned but the lighthouse situated on the sea wall that once protected them has recently been restored.

View the pic in Facebook, right-click on it and get the link - paste it here as with other pics.

This is how I do the pics in my blog.

Thanks for reminding me of this great spot! In 93-4 I was working at the school in Ulverston. I ran up to the lighthouse at dawn one morning to check out the newly fallen snow on the fells. I made it back down late for my first lesson...
