Is anyone after a specialist white water canoe?
I have a bell Ocoee, yellow, that I bought 3 summers ago, fully outfitted, paddled a little and havent paddled since. I love the boat but dont have time to paddle it and am sad to see it sitting there wanting to go on the water. So she is looking for a new home.
Any sensible offers will be considered

Not to worry, I've just picked up a Svetec(?) Ocoee from a chap yesterday. Hope you sell though.
I'll be posting for paddling advice and tips soon as I'm new to OC1 stuff.

I'm based in Matlock if you fancy a float sometime, I'm sadly down there a few times a week paddling an orange Esquif Prelude.

The fact that classified ads are open to only people who contribute (pay by another word)... The owners and mods are of course free to run their site how they like, but that's definately not the usual way of doing things for big internet forums (even ones run by commercial interests, like the Landrover Owner International magazine website allow members to advertise in the classified area of the forum for free).

Thanks for the offer, I'm desperate to get out on the water in it and have been crossing all digits for some rain. I'm based in New Mills near the Goyt but do come down to Matlock quite often. I'll look forward to seeing you on the river at some point and watching how it is suposed to be done!

LRO was perhaps a bit of a poor example... I am/have been part of the staff for four websites myself, of these; three have the owners stumping up the not insubstantial hosting costs; and one is hosted off a private server with the help of friend who happens to have a suitably fast internet connection.

The latter is a bit of a special case, but of the former: the One of note is a site slightly smaller than this one; they get a small amount of financial support from several companies within that field which lessens the owners burden and sell some merchandise for a modest profit both of which help but by no means eliminate the costs... However, the owner (like Mark and numerous other webmasters of sites that became runaway successes) does not routinely publicly acknowlege or priveledge the people who pay to support the site but instead thank them sincerly for their kindness and generosity in private...

That seems to be the "Norm" for forums run by non-profit making entities or individuals; I can't fully explain why, but using hosting contributions as a discriminator between users really offends my sensibilities... I must have been on the internet too long now.

Of course: because commercial sites offer something worth paying for, rather than asking for money to access a service with a market value of ~£0.00

As I said above I also find the idea of people being given advantages in the hierachy of a purportedly open social structure (because a big forum community is just that) because they gave a financial donation quite galling; this is at least partly because its so unusual on the internet, but also because I don't think people would be comfortable with that IRL, so why on the internet?

If SOTP was a subscription service, or a "closed/invitation only" site, I think I would feel somewhat differently about that second paragraph.

Sorry, but I just don't understand any of your logic.

If you want to access the client base, you need to pay. The access is clearly valuable. On the basis that there are benefits acruing to contributors, they need to receive some added value, however small that may be.

Remember a charge for classifieds also stops the non-contributors popping on and placing an advert, but never joining the community.

Many websites don't allow users to post for sale ads until you have a certain amount of posts, a good idea if it's to stop dodgy sales, but if moneys tight for a small website a small fee isn't the end of the world if your selling a few hundred squids worth of boat.

Also is your's a mango colour (yellow/orange)? I spoke to Svetek a little while back trying to find out some info on my boat and it turns out they only made a limited number in this colour - similar to an ocoee but with a bit more rocker - supposedly only 2 known to be in this country - I have one and........
Currently mine is stripped down and undergoing new outfitting which I'll have finished in time for the new whitewater season in the UK - the sooner the better as my trad Esquif Pro is showing more signs of wear after a 2 week canoeing holiday in the Central Massif area in France - paddled a few of Pete Knowles favourites - Lot, Tarn and Allier - if anyone would like any info send me a pm or email!

I dont object to SOTP charging but it just seems pointless for me to pay to sell my boat as I am selling my boat as I am not paddling. I need to fund ski kit instead.
