Hi Ade, I have to say I totaly agree about mk 1 eyeball and fingers if I can look at an item deciding to buy or not is pretty easy these days.
Snowdonia is a long way off, I have thought about a trip to a shop but I'm too busy to do so easily.
Down sleeping bag advise please^

Talk to RAB - unless things have changed since I last looked, this is what they now offer to extend bags as distinct from a mtm service. Which is a real pity. Progress? Not.

Thank you to all who have posted not only with this thread but also in regards to my question about tents, I have been very impressed with all the helpfull advise given.
I have found a place in Cambridge who do the Atko tent, Rab bags and Meindal boots, so I will get in to have a look in person as soon as I can, which should give me a better idea of what I would like to get.

Re: Down sleeping bag advise please
An update for those who posted I bought the Marmot Womans Helium bag.
The Ladies version is shorter and narrower, it is nice to have a bag nearer my length, and I think it is wide enough, this has the added benefit of being lighter/smaller packed as a result.
Anyway I have only been in the bag indoors to test for fit, and it is very snuggly (technical term) and although the comfort rating is -9 it is Farrrrrrrrrrrr warmer than one of my synthetic bags rated -15.
I took the chance while it was on offer, and I'm happy with my choice. Now I need a cold wet night to see if I'm still happy !

When it's time for a new sleeping bag, I'll give Helsport's latest creation Kongsfjorden a closer look. It's two bags; a warm down bag and a thinner synthetic bag which can be used together or separately. One of its innovative features is the two short zippers allowing the user to get his/her hands out for reading, cooking in the tent opening etc. etc.

The older I get, the better I used to be.

Looks interesting, although his posture is terrible so okay for a quick map read but not for a novel.
I have the snug pack special forces twin bag set up. With both bags together it is very warm and I like it a lot to sleep in. However this is a set up which is bulky and heavy, so not so good for carrying on an aeroplane with weight limits etc. I bought the Down bag for the purposes of light weight and small pack size both for flying but also for smal pack size in a kayak, together with light weight for backpacking. This new system probably would not be quite so good for either. I could put one of my thin synthetic bags into the Helium if I had bought the mans version. If the Helium is either not warm enough or I want a water proof bag I will look at the Alpkit which has Entrant cover or a Rab with Quantum Endurance.
