anybody out there using a cranked paddle shaft for OC1/WW paddling?
(Not a bent shaft for flat watre, which btw are brillant).
Any issues relating to their use?
see Thrill of the Paddle for photo.
More to the point, where can I get one??

curved blades
Never used a cranked shaft but I would think it be more comfy on the wrist.
Two years ago down at the Tyne Tours I bought a secondhand paddle with the name ATERSTICK written on the paddle .I used it both days strange at first it was like planting the paddle in treacle smooth and solid with a almost brutal catch ,you really had to pull the boat to the paddle.A few other paddlers tried it out awsome , holy . . . . , what the . . . . , like putting it on a shelf one guy said after rolling his boat must get one these ATERSTICKS .
Non of us had heard of this type before all my paddles were cheap Quessy which we brought back from Canada by the dozen.I typed ATERSTICK into the computer WATERSTICK .what a . . . .
I managed to get another one then found out lately that the company has stopped production .
The other paddles I use are WERNER BANDIT sweet but I dont think it will take to much bashing, ROUGHSTUFF looks similar to a waterstick but heavier not as smooth.
The only problem is when you go to a flat blade again its like there`s no paddle at the end of the shaft .
So that was my introduction into curved blades .
I paddle a prelude and checking out the rapids from a standing posistion dosent come easy , so quick and powerfull last min adjustments are usually on the menu.
hope this dribble helps.

bentshaft canoe paddle
They are great for sit & switch racing canoe due to the low seat position when they improve efficiency due to better biomechanics, and for a low cruisig stroke in normal OC, but can lead to bad paddling techique when sitting/kneeling higher when a straight shaft is much better.
There are some serious problems with them in white water (I know that someone will say they have done it for years), which is why they are rarely used, however grade 1-2 doesn't really count.
Personally I'd never use one, but if you like it don't let me put you off. However, I'd suggest you look at your stroke with straight and bentshaft and be clear in you own mind why you want bent.

Um, yeah. My brain wasn't on the case.
Disregard my comments.
Must try harder.

cranked paddles
yeah I use one I got Chris from Nomad Paddle works in Bala to make me one to my specs especially for OC1 and C1 paddling.
Contact Chris and say you want the same cranked C1 paddle as Ian Duffy
he will know what to make up.
massive increase in performance especially on the offside - I highly recommend them.
