Please be aware of the following works and river closures on the River Medway around the Yalding area between Monday 6th Oct 2008 and Fri 27th Feb 2009.
1. The Environment Agency are replacing East Lock and Oak Weir Lock canoe portages and boaters landing stages. To enable this the river pens upstream and downstream of these locks will need to be lowered on occasions. Also there will be no portage points available during this time as each lock will be a construction site.
River pens affected are:
Porters Lock - East Lock
East Lock to Oak Weir Lock
Oak Weir Lock to Sluice Weir Lock
2. On a date during October we will be undertaking the repair to the canoe pass at Sluice Weir (however, please note comments above regarding the lowering of the river pens)
3. Further downstream, Hampstead Lock will be drained as the lock walls are to be rebuilt. These works are due to commence around the beginning of November and last until end of Feb 2009. We hope to keep the downstream landing stage open.
None of these works should affect the weirpool at Yalding. Also, with Hampstead Lock downstream landing stage remaining open it will still be possible to canoe from here to our new canoe access facilities (slipway, canoe access platform, toilets, showers) at Allington Lock. Someone has posted a good link (with photos) of these on "song of the paddle". I can't show the thread on this forum but you can find it by "Allington Slipway" into Google. It should be the top link
