The big step to sea kayaking

Postby cornish yaker » Sun Jul 27, 2008 6:10 pm

Hi there, I've been a surf yaker for 7 or 8 years, with the odd dabble in a general kayak going around the cornish coast.

Over the last few weeks I've been trying to look for an expedition sea kayak. Basically I'd like it to have a large storage capacity without compromising the speed.

My heart is set on this kayak at the moment:

I was wondering if any guys here could give me some info about this, (as I'm not very experienced in knowing about expedition sea kayaks.) It's around £1700, this was that my price range is roughly.
The P&H Quest looks very nice, but that seems more expensive.

I really like the look of the P&H Cetus: phseakayaks.com/osb/itemdetails.cfm?ID=18
Could you guys give me some info about this, is it good for large expeditions, etc...Also I couldn't find a price.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I dare say there's plenty of experienced sea kayakers out there.

Any website links, etc, will be greatly appreciated. I live in Cornwall.

My price range is £1700'ish. I'm looking for a large capacity without compromising the speed. To get an idea of the conditions I plan to kayak in, it's basically the coast of Europe.

We have a variety of possible kayaks in our village in East Cornwall. e.g Explorer, Explorer LV, Nordkapp (2007), Nordkapp SS, Nordkapp HM, Baidarka, Capella. You could try them on the river here. Tiff on this forum has a couple for sale, used, from our village, Calstock, on the Tamar. You could PM me if you're near us and are interested.
Cetus is available for £2095 here:

You should be able to get a used composite boat in good condition for £500 to £1200. A good quality paddle, a spare paddle, pumps and all the other goodies and clothing could take the remainder of your budget.
Nick.

I'd advise taking up Nicks offer, meet up and try those boats. The Explorer seems quite capable and popular, my dad paddles one (LV version) and is very happy with it.
