BAMAK Born Again Middle Aged Kayaker.

OAP - Old Age Paddler

MAP - Middle Age Paddler

YUP - Young Upstart Paddler

Time flies though, doesn't it? Left school & stopped paddling, & sold my Snipe, went & got a life, house, etc.

xxx years later daughter does Scouting, I go along, get roped in, join up and three years later got to Grade 3 WW. Wondered why I ever stopped!

I have just got back into Kayaking last year following 14 years out of the sport.

Work,wife,dog,kids all took over !!!.

Now want some me time back.

What really got me was the recent advert in "Paddles" for paddleworks. "Dave last shopped in 1989" - It looked just like me even down to the Purple Topo and Shlegal Paddles.

My BA had flourescent pockets and my spraydeck had a bomb proof foam insert.

Thankfully I saw the light and now have a Jackson AllStar & H20 paddles.

Only problem now it takes me weeks to recover from a paddle !!!

This thread intrigues me because it is something I aspire to. I'm thinking I might get back into it in about 10 years time. The question is, will there be any undammed rivers left at that point and will there be any fuel left for me to fly and drive to exciting places?

I hit the big 40 this year so on average that's about the start of middle age, not gonna make any comment about people who might already be there..... :)

I got called middle aged recently, I nearly cried.

I'm 33! (was 32 at the time)

Maybe I just look old, advantage at 15 but rubbish at 25+.

Can confirm that Neill does indeed look old! He, he!

Just started paddling at age 38 (though dabbled a little in the past) and getting lots of great coaching and tips from youngsters like Neill. Thanks mate!

I'm the other way Ive been riding bikes since I was 14 and still get withdrawal sympoms if I've not been out on the bike for 2 weeks. I used to see all these plastic things on cars whilst out and about round Wales, so looked it up and found kayaking (and Dave@trc nightshift) at 31, 2 years on and my wife and freinds say it's an early midlife crisis, now im out most weekends and in the summer 1-2 evenings a week paddlin.
