Surf forecasts

Postby Mark R » Sun Dec 08, 2002 4:12 pm

I rely on two forecasts for surf in the SW...

www.a1surf.com/surfcheck-...ecast.html

www.surfsystem.co.uk/fore...rame.shtml

This weekend 8-10 foot surf was forecast for the north coast of Devon/ Cornwall. The second report got it right....3 foot. We nearly went on the strength of the first report.

Any thoughts on these forecasts? Do they really have any more value than looking at the weather forecast, or your horoscope, for that matter?

I don't really know, because the forecast is always crap whenever we consider going surfing! I get the impression though that surfsystem somehow feed the actual conditions (for the SW anyway) back into their model to make it more accurate. I used to read another forecast by soulsurfer which was always a bit more vague, but explained his reasoning convincingly.

The guys don't seem to go surfing anymore, probably because the surf is so bloody far away (unless you are into East coast surfing).

Surf Forecasts

I spent the weekend surfing at Llangennith on the Gower (so not too far from N Devon), and I would say that 8-10 foot was about right. Clean too (as a1surf promised). Though perhaps I should have looked at the weather forecast too: 3 degrees got a bit chilly.

A1surf gives the face height, but I've heard of some forecasts using the height of the backs - normally much less.

Anyway, a fantastic surf weekend.

Surf forecasts

I tend to still use the T.V. weather forecasts and watch the isobars. But if we are unsure on the day, a quick look at the Tiki surf web cam at Saunton gives a good idea of what is actually happening down there. It is updated every 20 minutes.
Cheers for now
