Surf kayaking contests

Postby steve.bowens » Sat Dec 23, 2006 10:14 pm

HI

1. The rules for surfing are on the BCUsurf website w w w . b c u s u r f . o r g . u k
2. The scoring in a normal surf kayak contest is awarded on three criteria:
a. Take off - if you catch a big wave you will score more points than if you catch a small one, if you catch a steep wave you will score more points than if you catch it really early.
b. Ride - if you have a long ride but only going in a straight line you will score less points than if you have a short aggressive (lots of turns/manoeuvres) ride, however the in-between of this depends largely on the judges at that contest and comes down to personal preference of the judges.
c. end move - this is the last manoeuvre performed on the wave, if you do a cartwheel to end the ride you will score more than if you just go straight, however if you do lots of manoeuvres in the white water these will not be scored in a Ranked event, this is because only moves not the "Green" wave are scored with only the end manoeuvre being aloud to be in the white water (in line with the ethos of “surfing”).

This scoring however may be adapted for plastic class as this is the entry level class where newcomers complete to get a feel for the whole thing, for example competitors are often allocated points for manoeuvres in the white water as well as on a green wave.

3. The judges are always on the beach and are always in an elevated position so as they can see what is going on.

4. The beach is not closed to the public, however (as with board surfing contests) the contest area will be defined and public are made aware of the area and that people will be competing on the waves in that area and as such it may not be the best place to go for casual “non competitive” surf.

If you have never tried competing before please come along and join in, it is a great way to meet other surf kayakers and find out what is possible in the waves. There will be classes to suit everyone and trophies for all categories. It is great fun and a good learning experience.

Hi, I'm heading down with a couple from Weymouth.

I'll be bringing a Plastic Valley Storm with me. Should people want to try it whilst I'm there, come and find me (or ring on 07795 692296).
