Tree in River Nith Gorge.

Tree in River Nith Gorge.

Postby Colin C » Sun Aug 17, 2008 9:06 pm

There is a new tree fully across the river Nith just after the last drop in the gorge section. It is about 20 yards after the drop, there is an breakout on river left before it, just after the drop. It is a reasonable portage on this side. If you miss this there is a small gap on the river right side, between the rock wall and branch, but I suggest that you exercise caution, particularly with intermediate paddlers.
A bow saw will shift part of it, so something for a day when we are next down.
Cheers

Is that the same tree with the baby dangling on a string?

Hi
It is the same tree. It is very macabre to see a baby doll hanging by its neck on the tree over the river, swaying in the breeze ( a little poetic licence employed here)

Sorry Colin but I could'nt resist hanging it there. Thought it might give you all a bit of a warning about the tree! Hope you all managed down safely. I guess we were just in front of you.

Tree in Nith Gorge

Postby George Mcmillan » Mon Sep 01, 2008 8:36 am

I've allready posted a thought about getting this tree removed.
I'm up for helping in the removal of the tree but it can't be done by one man?
If you plan on using the Nith like we do help us get the tree removed.

Nith

Postby George Mcmillan » Wed Sep 03, 2008 8:29 am

Kenny,

Safety First - Fun Second. Thats just my rule. It's Beelzebubs 2nd paddle in a few years and didn't want any mishaps.

Seriously I've got a plan to remove this tree now. Might not make it before my holiday but will definatly get to it when I'm back in 3 weeks. On another note Patna Gorge tonight to get another tree out before water levels go up.

An update on the tree in the Nith Gorge. Some kind folk from Durham tried to cut it away but unfortunately this has not improved the situation. It now lies fully across the river. Part of the tree can be seen on river left, and it can be paddled across from centre to river right at around 2+ on the gauge. It is just underwater, but at lower levels I don't think it will be passable. Not one to try and swim over. If you can not see it, check on river left for part of the tree, if that is still there, then presume it is still just under the surface.

Yup some guys in our group cut through it on river left. It has dropped so the passaage on right is wider in higher water. Hit the last gorge drop hard right against the rock wall, still wouldn't recommend swimming it!

Think tree may shift if river floods so take care if the levels get any higher

PS that doll is creepy, why would u do that?!

A few of us tried to move it on sunday it was cut most way through it was jamming saw but should snap next time river rises. Doll was relocated to hang above side of river. Tree is still dangerous so no swimming.
