Re: A day with Greenland Paddles
I bought a Formby Finger from Mike Bell last week, and used it for the first time doing the Bardsey Sound trip. There were some lumpy conditions on the flood, but the paddles were superb and provided power ans stability beyond that of my usual, now broken Werners. A few years ago I would probably not bothered with the Greenland stick, but now my attitude has changed.
Firstly, they seem to be more efficient. I won't say "faster" as they depend on the paddler like any other paddle. They are more efficient because, maybe for the first time I have concentrated more on my technique, looking at the stroke, the delivery, aeration, flutter etc.
By the time I had done the trip to Puffin, I had started to appreciate the importance of proper technique, and started to scrape the surface of the potential of this bit of kit.
I have just bust my Werner, but will not be replacing it yet with a "modern" paddle, it is my intention to build up skills on the traditional style
It's a bit like starting again really!
Oh, and they do seem to eat the miles up, with a lot less strain than I am used to!,,,
Love my Formby Finger

I like mine too.
I whittled it down from some pine and larch using a planing knife. Very pacifying and mollifying.

Good stuff guys! I am hoping to try out Mike's paddle at some point and also the new carbon fibre GP - I really like CF too as it makes a really nice paddle. Great to see "Made in the UK"!!!
