Paddling further east from there yesterday an unusually high number and size of recent landfalls was noticed on the Clay formations between Kimmeridge and St Aldhelm's Head. In fact there were quite a few flurries of stones as we passed and the cliffs were still seeping an unusual amount of water. Paddlers of a paleontological bent may do well to leave their hammers at home for a while longer and choose wildcamp locations conservatively...

Crumbs!

Have paddled past a few fresh(ish) landslides in the past and wondered about the chance of being caught by one.

So when does the central part of the Dorset coast get closed for the Olympics?
If I ever get my car fixed I was planning to try and complete some unfinished paddles whilst I am in the south next month.

Olympic opening ceremony in Weymouth is on Friday night. Apparently there will be fireworks - I am thinking of a possible paddle, but need to check what the 'exclusion zone' is - don't want to be shot by the SBS, or apprehended by these guys...

Mark, I believe this is the best current map available

http://media.weymouth.gov.uk/docstore/h ... ematic.pdf

A bunch of FAQ's can be found here:-

I'll be doing nebulous things in the kayak bit of the LOCOG area this Fri and Sat; I'll probably still be baffled then, but will be exploring the boundaries Sat evening and Sunday during the day. If you'd like to know the best place to launch, I may know by then. Possibly.

So Durdle Door will be out of bounds but Portland Bill has access as long as you can get to Portland through the traffic, which given that the sailing base is on that road is probably going to be restricted. Those being the 2 bits of the coast I particularly wanted to tackle if possible. I have sailed all over Weymouth bay as a kid, roughly as far east as Pontins (a bit further perhaps) so the only gaps between Poole Harbour and Chesil beach are Lulworth to Pontins, and the Bill itself.

(actually it looks like I'll be there after the main olympics anyway)

Ref Lulworth, do bare in mind there's a fair schlepp from the car park down to the beach during the daytime; the narrow road is only open to vehicles down to the slipway at certain hours this time of year. I think it may be before 1000hrs in the morning, and possibly after 1800hrs in the evening but best to check... and do check out Worbarrow Bay's Tyneham village if you get the chance. Also (enough, already!) I'd certainly check that you're not encroaching on the MOD boundaries if there's any Live Firing on the Army Ranges...
