DSLR Camera Case for Expedition

Postby LiamF » Thu May 03, 2012 2:02 am

In June I'm heading off to the west coast of Canada for a 7-day expedition in the Desolation Sound area. I recently bought a Canon 60D and would love to take it with me, however I need some advice regarding storage. I'm not planning on using the camera on the water so I just need some means of storing it in the boat. I would like to take my 18-135mm and 10-22mm lens as well as the usual accessories. What would be the best solution? Hard case/soft case? All together/separate?

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

If you aren't going to be using it on the water strip the camera down and fit it and lenses into a pelicase for maximum protection. The watershed dry bags are much loved by those that have them, I am just always wary of snagging dry bags on protruding fittings etc. which is partly why the stuff I wanted to be most certain if keeping dry (sleeping bag) used to go in my front hatch, because it had no deck fittings over it. When carrying cameras or spare lenses not for use on the water I used pelicase(s) tucked in the space behind my seat which was full of pump and hose clips etc. as well as bolts from towline cleat and stuff - and was a space that always got some water in (you bring some in just getting in). With a modern layout with a bulkhead directly behind the seat and larger hatches you may not need a hard case as much, but do think about where your stove and any tinned stuff are going to go, probably near your camera kit.

Thanks for the replies. I had my eyes on the peli cases but thought they might be a bit bulky. What size would you recommend for the DLSR and two lenses? Other things like spare battery etc. I could store in a decent dry bag?
