I am trying to get my head around the BCU / Canoe England “accountability to its members” question and was looking at this article:
http://www.canoe-england.org.uk/media/pdf/BCU%20Committee%20Regulations.pdf
Specifically I was struck by the following:
“4. English Development Team
(a) The English Development Team (EDT) shall manage the development of
canoeing and recreation, excepting those areas covered by the English Access
and English Coaching committees and competition which has been delegated to
the SMC, in the regions.
(b) The EDT shall comprise voting representatives from:
• 10 Regional Development Teams.
• 1 English Canoe Lifeguards Committee.
• 1 English Disabilities Committee.
• 1 English Sea Touring Committee.
• 1 English Touring & Recreation Committee.
• 1 English Whitewater Rafting Committee.
(c) Each member of the EDT shall have one vote.”
So who are the English Sea Touring Committee and how to get I to vote them in?
According to the blurb:
“6. English Discipline Specific Committees
(a) There are five discipline specific committees namely:
I. English Canoe Lifeguards Committee
ii. English Disabilities Committee
iii. English Sea Touring Committee
iv. English Touring and Recreation Committee
v. English Whitewater Rafting Committee
(b) These committees shall hold an annual consultative meeting at which they will
each elect such voting members as the committees consider necessary up to a
maximum of twelve.”
So when was the last English Sea Touring Committee consultative meeting held, where was it advertised, how many attended and voted?
A further question would be why are the minutes of all BCU Canoe England Committees and subcommittee meetings not accessible to members, I can find AGM and (dated) slalom minutes but nothing from the various committees that seem to be driving policy.
English Sea Touring Committee?

Re: English Sea Touring Committee?
Hmm - we have a link in the Almanac which I've just checked and it's broken. A quick rake around on the BCU/CE site provides a link to Sea Kayaking in which there is mention of the Sea Committee - with a link. Which is broken. Impressive!

IIRC, Craig Addison, who wanders past here occasionally, is (or used to be) secretary of the STC.

And why oh why is there always a seperate committee for disability, I like to get out in my kayak because it frees me,
Out there I look the same (until I am out swimming), it really frustrates me.

If it hurts, you are still alive!
