Small LED torch

This neat little torch can now be found in your local Shell petrol station for £2.99 - it says it's weatherproof and mine certainly lived thro an hour in a bucket of water. A remarkably effective little bit of kit which will fit easily into a BA pocket.

I've been using something very similar for the past couple of months worth of night paddles. I have 2 - 1 or the bow, 1 for the stern. Mine cost about £4 each from my local hardware store and have stood up to 3/4 night paddles per week with no problems. I dry them carefully after each paddle and they have proved invaluable.

Thats handy, you've done all the leg work. I was considering a couple on my next refill.. Which will come in handy..

Hi Mike,

You clearly have occult powers.....

I was reading this thread and had just uttered the words "they'd come handy" when the lights went out and we had a 3 hour power cut!

Now where's my nearest Shell station?

cheers

While on the subject I can highly recommend this one for £5:

http://www.sportsdirect.com/karrimor-mi ... rch-796009

Very simple, not focusable, but excellent even beam of light for close work, and VERY, VERY lightweight.

Sports direct also do other more expensive Karrimor headtorchs, but these are less impressive for the money.

A few weeks ago I bought a torch that looks exactly the same on ebay for the same price. I then saw loads of other torches that seemed cheap on Ebay, so I ended up buying a LED headtorch, as well and 2 more of the small hand torches to keep in mine and the wifes car, plus a bloody great Maglite American thing that I keep in my car just below my seat (I don't know if it could be considered as a weapon, but makes me feel relaxed knowing it's there). But basically Ebay has hundred of different LED torches that are very good value.

Wonderful things - I've had one for over 20 years and still works perfectly, although it now carries the battle scars of a lifetime of hard use. Every other torch I've ever had has died - this one jsut keeps on going. Every single bit of it can be bought as a spare part!

I do hear they have indeed been put to good effect as weapons! The big 5D cell version would make a most effective club - -

OMG - next campfire conversation is going to be torches! I was pondering on the bucket thing - I mean - WHY would anyone want to put their touch in a bucket of water - but then I remembered the flare thingey ephisode. All became clear.

TESTING!

SO - It works! Flares don't (luckily)

I used to know a guy who trained the US police in the use of this torch as a weapon against knives, guns, allsorts. He was very scary.

Is everybody aware that you can now buy an LED conversion for old maglites? The LED and control electronics have been packaged into the envelope of the old bulb so the upgrade is as easy as...

It seems there's a whole sub culture about flashlights - everthing you ever wanted to know, and masses of stuff you probably don't, can be found here

Having filled a happy hour browsing, I feel truly humbled to discover the depth of interest there seems to be in the humble flashlight. Given the cost and technical details of some of the lights that lot talk about, the word "humble" is most definitly inappropriate though.

On which note, a Mag with an LED conversion (or indeed a new LED Mag - which is the same thing) would seem to be seriously old school.
