So - what's this? And more to the point, what should we expect to see if the "blob" is removed?

All wrong - so far.

What make is it?

What model is it?

- - and what would we expect to find at the stern?

Well - I'd say Valley Nordkapp H20, and would expect to see a skeg, although not that far back possibly so perhaps just the curve up of the stern?

Nope - I think its a Revel from Tahe Marine and I would expect to see a cheap price tag.

Valley - yes.

Nordkapp - yes.

Nordkapp H20 - no. (H20 = "hatches - 2 - oval".)

Is it the Mega boat that was quite similar to the HM?

Under the blob is a portage trolley.

Given Jim's reputation here in relation to a certain photograph - it would have to be another place to store gear.

But I still think its the HR

Ok, under the blob is a modified hull shape. Rather than the normal curve up to the stern, it continues flat then rises more sharply up as they have created a fixed skeg?

There's one in the Almanac...
Nordkapp LR - "Long cockpit with sliding (racing) seat - built in understern rudder"

-- but that one doesn't have hatches. Link here:

It's a Valley Nordkapp Jubilee HM of all things! Never seen one in UK - has anyone? I always thought the Jubilee only came with the curved stern / drop-down skeg.

Image

However, with thanks to wilsoj2 for the 2005 Valley / GRO catalogue from the States it seems that they at least had the Jubillee available both in the curved stern / drop down skeg AND an HM varient. It ALSO shows what the American market called the H20 (which we just know now as the Nordkapp)

It closes a loop in fact - a chap called J-Dominique Sellier sent me some pics a while back showing a Jubilee with the HM stern and I've been looking for confirmation.

Entertaining couple of hours on that one :-)
However, left with a slightly worrying feeling that I'm descending into new depths of sea kayak nerdiness by becoming so transfixed on solving your puzzle!

Stan Chladek (founder of GRO) was a big fan of the modified hull Nordkapp. As a result Nordkapp HMs were among the most common Nordkapps in the USA. I've seen more HM (pre-H2O) Nordkapps than HS. Peter Orton once noted that they are far more common in the States than in the UK. So, for us a Jubilee HM is not a find ;-)

What is most amazing is that most British paddlers haven't latched onto the fact that Valley sell some slightly different models in the US to the ones they sell at home. The H2O may just be a 2 hatch Jubilee with a non-UK name, or it may be slightly higher volume that the standard Jubilee that we have - I never did fully get to the bottom of that one, but then I never really put a huge amount of effort into trying to find out.

I had no idea they were making versions of the Jubilee with a built in skeg like an HM sounds like it might be a good boat for me if I ever trade up from my SK. I wonder if I could convince them to make one and not put it straight in a container to the US?

"Jubilee has the Keyhole cockpit and a round front hatch and has a little more rocker in the stern, this was then replaced with the Jubilee H2O which has the Keyhole cockpit plus Oval front hatch and as someone rightly noted has reduced rocker in the stern." -Peter Orton
http://www.paddling.net/message/showThr ... 932#591864

The current Nordkapp is what was called the H2O in the States while continuing to carry the Jubilee name in the UK. Besides having less stern rocker than the Jubilee, the H2O (now Standard) nose (bow overhang) was trimmed down a bit from the Jubilee. The Jubilees have the most pronounced bow of all Nordkapps and the most stern rocker of all full size 'kapps.

Now here's a thing. Knoydart no longer seem to make any ref to the Classic on their w/site. It'll be interesting to see if it features in the new Valley offering once their new w/site goes live.
