Summer Isles

Postby Jim » Mon Jan 20, 2003 8:01 pm

A friend of my Dad's was talking about the Summer Isles for a trip this year, I thought I may as well enquire what experience anyone else has of them?

I think they are pretty close to the mainland (I thought they would be on the Ullapool map but I was wrong) so crossings won't be a concern, tips on campsites, water sources, habitation etc. are all useful though! All we need is a flat area with soft ground (pref. water too) but I was surprised how hard that was to find around Raasay! I'm sure someone mentioned a trip a while back in this area?

I know better than to visit Gruinard island, should we end up that way!

Summer Isles

Postby Graham Dore » Mon Feb 03, 2003 8:49 pm

We paddled around the islands over two days and spent a night on the Bottle Islands. It is a wonderful area but we found that suitable landing/camping places were not overly plentiful. I think that Horse? Island, the one close to the mainland village of Acultibui (I have no idea how to spell that) might be quite good (probably better than the place we chose but closer to civilisation).

Cheers,
Graham.

Summer Isles

Just read your original post again - sorry I didn't answer many of the questions.
I think they are on the 1:50000 map to the north of the one which covers Ullapool - they are between Ullapool and Lochinver.
I think you would need to carry water - we did.
There is a village on the main island - can't remember the name off hand without a map but it's to the north of the group.
There is a wooden cabin on one of the islands (I think the one immediately to the north of the Bottle Island group) but there was no-one there when we called by.
The outermost of the group had a great paddleable arch on the outer side.
Sorry this is a bit vague - email me on graham.dore@amsjv.com if you want me to get a map out and give a bit more detail.
Graham.

They are shown on Streetmap:

Overview at

Detail at :

Certainly look like they could go from Achiltibuie.

Horse island doesn't look like it has water but Tanera Mor does.

I paddled round Rassay a few years ago and had no trouble finding flat space for camping or water.

Most locals have no problem with you camping rough, except the "locals" who have moved there from down south!

Let us know how you get on.
