Round Britain trip

Postby Mark R » Sat Apr 27, 2002 10:07 pm

This fellow is soloing the UK coast from May, complete with some epic crossings...

www.kayakingforcancer.co.uk

He needs somewhere to sleep and eat on route, how about getting in touch with an offer?

I've made him an offer for South Dorset.

Thanks for the offer of somewhere to stay. I will be setting off from Aberystwyth on the 11th of may and heading north so if anyone can help let me know. I am raising money for the Leukaemia research fund in memory of my brother mark. If you wish to donate go to my website and donate online. Thanks for your support.

Hey Simon, turns out we've met. Ok I confess Phil Clegg had to remind me, but you joined us (a group of Phil's friends from Wellington and Taunton) on the Conwy a couple of years ago. And Nigel came on one of our Scotland trips.

Could be some while before you read this, since you set off at the weekend!

Good coverage at www.bbc.co.uk/shropshire/...unch.shtml !!

Simon seems to be doing reasonably well, 450 miles since setting off despite the lousy month of weather we have had...

round Britain

Simon is near Scourie and about to tackle Cape Wrath. A paddler was going to join him yesterday, Friday. I have spoken to him on the phone and the trip seems to be going OK despite the weather.

In a link to another thread on here. His mobile is on the orange network which seems to be particularly poor reception. I few years I naively thought mobiles where for use when it was difficult to get to a landline, appears to be the opposite!

On the spot report! As Mark says Simon has sped round from Scourie. I joined him for a few days last week so here are some quick high or low lights!

- Laid low in Gairloch for 10 days with septacemia followed by allergic reaction to penacilin (sp)!
- Justine, film maker based on Angelsey, joined at Scourie to paddle the North Coast.
- Scourie, round Cape Wrath (top left corner) to just south of Duncansby Head (top right corner) done in 2 and half days, about 100 miles!
- Clocked doing 10 knots (20km/hr) through Pentland Firth.
- Last seen undertaking 25 mile open crossing with Justine (well with landing on headland after 10mile) between Brora and Burghhead (North facing Moray Firth coastline)last Wednesday

Just heard from a usually unreliable source that they're 'somewhere around Norfolk'.

They were in Weymouth at the weekend, and are now heading west towards the Devon border, keep a look out for them if you're in the area.

Hi Richard, good you met up with him, I missed him by a couple of hours twice last week, typical. The website latest position puts him in Bude, at this rate he'll be back in Aberystwith by the end of the month.

Spoke to them at lunchtime, they were due to set off from Bude at 2pm today to do the crossing. Looks like they've got ideal cconditions for it.

He's finished, made it to Aberystwyth on Saturday as planned. They've made in excess of £10K for Leukaemia Research already.
Bet he needs a rest now!!

Well done Simon.

Let's not forget that Phil Clegg joined Simon at Aberdeen and has paddled the whole way from there - must be about half the trip. Well done Phil.

Oops, sorry Phil, it's easy to forget about the others that are involved in things, that without whom the thing would have been that much more difficult, like the drivers, other paddlers, BBC Shropshire etc. etc..
