Hi - just to let you know planning is well underway for this new event hosted by Poole Harbour Canoe Club. Entry is free and this is open to everyone.
Qajaq.22nd and 23rd September 2012.
The competition is organised by a group of volunteers to encourage Greenland paddling and personal skills. It aims to build on the thousands of years of kayak evolution and the techniques that go with it to enable the paddler to survive on the sea.
Participants are encouraged to join in and help with the organisation, whether boiling a kettle or judging an event. You don’t have to be a paddler, just committed to the ethos of the event.
The competition will be based around the beaches at Studland, Dorset. Part of this is sheltered by the “Training bank” and will be used for the rolling competition. Beach access is normally via the National trust car park at Knoll beach. The competition area is located about 2 km north along the beach.
Racing will follow a coastal route. There will be a course of about 10 km.
Greenland ropes will be held in the woodland at Knoll beach.
A competition with no prizes!..
There is no entry fee, as we want to encourage paddlers to attend with no barriers. A list of winners and participants will be put on the website.
If you want to participate, please fill in an entry form which will soon appear on PHCC website and www.qajaquk.org website.
There is a large amount of accommodation in the area. Unfortunately the nearest campsite is about 4 miles away.
The coastline is managed by the National trust and wild camping is discouraged.
Friday evening.
Move in to accommodation and meet at the Bankes Arms – Studland.
Saturday
Kayak race - Briefing at 09.30 , Ready to start at 10.00
Rolling tuition and training, throughout the day.
Harpoon throwing – (Harpoons provided!) 14.00
Greenland ropes16.30
End of day discussions – Bankes Arms.
Sunday
Greenland rolling competition.
Paddle along the coast
Competition results, Debrief and Farewell!
For bad weather – alternative venues will be arranged that may involve travel by car. We’ll do our best to keep time and distance to a minimum.

Hi Mike (?),
Any chance you could repost the link for the mag. I'm having trouble downloading it. Nice to see RB reporting. Hopefully I'll be able to attend. I have good reason to be in the area that w/end apart from the event.
Incidentally I have a Hobbit Hole booked at Invercoe for the Friday and Sunday night. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to Scotland for the TKM so if any body wants to take the accomodation you could pm before I cancel it.

Most paddlers in the UK have had little or no exposure to Greenland style paddling and rolling and even less exposure to the rope games! There will be opportunities to try things out and there will be coaching on using a Greenland paddle and some Greenland rolls available. It should be a great opportunity to give the various things a try and have some fun!
