Uprights that come off

Postby Betty » Thu Jul 26, 2012 5:23 pm

I have got fold down uprights. They make a horrible noise even at low speeds, not so bad when the are folded down, but it still does my head in on long journeys. Is there any way of stopping the whistling moaning noise?

I saw some uprights once, years ago. They had a pin at the bottom of them that you could pull out and then remove the upright. The base of it was left on the roof bars, but you could take off the acctual upright. Does anyone know where you get these?

Just take the whole roof-bar assembly off when its not needed? You'll save (a little) fuel too that way

Thanks for that people. I will order some and see if they are less musical. I leave them on all the time because it takes ages for me to take the roof rack off and I have boats on the roof every other day.

I have those. I have found that it is the roof bars themselves that make all the noise. When I had a half width roof box and the uprights on with a small rack pad on the bars outside the upright I found the noise much better. When I took the roof box off it was noisy so I just thought I would try putting some pads on the bars on the other side of the uprights and silence has now returned (well, not silence but much, much quieter)

Why not get an engineering firm or someone you know to tack weld a bolt onto one side on the mount and use some of these at the other end

If you tightem them up enough they should hold it no problem.
