MWE APL?

Postby Canoe_princess » Wed Jun 06, 2012 1:49 pm

A quick question!

What do you think the chances are of a UKCCL2 coach getting exemption from MWE canoe training (still do the assessment) with the following tickets/experience.

MWE WW kayak
4 Star Kayak
4 Star Canoe
5 Star Canoe training
Coaching process
Slalom Module
Coaching the mind
Strong log book (he coaches regularly as part of job as outdoor instructor) including 2 weeks this year observing a L5 coach coaching on G2/3

So what is the crack when going for a MWE in an 'alternative discipline' if you got an MWE already? Anyone got experience of this?

If so what is the best way to 'build a case' this dude is short of time and money to do more courses so any imput will really help.

Thank you X

Looking at the list you mention, there are quite a few bits of coaching canoe skills on moderate water that aren't covered by the tickets already attained. For Instance, coaching on open water. OK, the candidate has his 4star but this is about leading in the environment rather than coaching. The MWE Kayak is no use here either as open water isn't covered in this craft.

Although there are quite a few similarities between canoe and kayak on moving water, there are quite a few differencies too (Tandem skills, poling, lining, tracking.......). The coaching process of these skills isn't covered in the tickets listed either.

I'd be very surprised if the candidate was able to APL the training course, bearing these factors in mind, however the only real answer is to fill in an APL form and find out. These forms do take a while to work their way through the system though.

I have just had my APL rejected for the MWE (kayak) by the BCU. They told me I needed a referance from a coach educator.
But they seem to change their minds alot so I would not be supprised if they have changed this since last week.
When in doubt PLF!

Clearly states that one of the two referees should be a coach educator......

The form is dated April 2010 so I doubt if it wil change any time soon!
