Postby carlalvey » Wed May 30, 2012 9:02 am

Hi all

after saturdays swim at hpp and rolling practice I found myself with a bunged up nose later in the day.
the next day it felt like I had a cold, felt sick and had some weird runny mucas coming from my nose every so often, like water(not nice I know).
Has anyone else had something like this,is it from poluted water???
been in the water loads before but always been fine.

Sounds like Leptospirosis, get yourself to the doctor and tell them you've been kayaking

I often have what feels like the river or the swimming pool pouring out of my nose the day after a play or rolling session, so I don't know if it is anything major to worry about. It isn't on the list of symptoms for Leptospirosis. Worth reading that up anyway, so that you know what to look out for. Unfortunately a lot of the symptoms could equally signify the flu, the one that really identifies it is the muscle pains.
it's not a playboat, it's a river runner

Leptospirosis typically has an incubation period of atleast 3 or 4 days (can be as long as 3 weeks) so it's unlikely to be this (though if symptoms get worse - especially muscle pain, high fever get it checked out. And if you start getting jaundice it's probably worth going straight to A&E because by that stage you'll be feeling proper shite & the GP will want to admit you to do liver function, kidney tests & blood cultures).
I'd have thought the major thing here is kayaking. Especially kayaking at HPP (it's got a bit of a bad
rep)
Lots of underwater time could force water into the sinuses which then drain a day (or two) later - hence the runny nose.
Having said all this, usually if you get 'Trent Belly' there'll be a lot of toilet time involved..
So I guess yeah, if it doesn't clear up, get it checked out.

Well it's HPP what do you expect, it has a massive reputation for bugs and stuff in the water. Normally they now give you a brief about what level the water clarity is like when you buy your bib.

I've been quite a few times and done the coke trick and I've been fine but my last visit myself and my mate both got sick and I was puking for 2 days. I had to take a day off work and as I was a contractor I lost a load of dosh. My mate took 2 days off and he is a self employed plumber so he wasn't pleased either.

I like the place but trying to avoid it if I can fine other places to go to.

I think Dave has nailed it.
You've filled your sinus cavity up with stuff it doesn't like!

I've had Leptospirosis and it wasn't anything like that.
It's like flu that gets worse and worse.
Remember what 99% of folk refer to as ‘flu’ is nothing of the sort it's just the humble common (or garden) cold.
Think: Aches, shivers, pain, the most incredible intense headache which simply gets worse and worse. Until you get antibiotics.

This thread may help with telling you what's going on:
