Heavy rain and high winds - England and Wales

Take care tomorrow (Sun 29th) because of the freak wintry weather. Very heavy rain and high winds together with daytime temps in single digits will make a day that would be pretty nasty in January, let alone the end of April. There's even a possibility of snow in the hills. It's been a long time since I experienced an April so relentlessly cold. Looks like April '12 is destined for the record books as the wettest ever.

It's been a fantastic day up here on Jura, blue skies and calm seas. Here's hoping the weather keeps away so we can paddle back to the mainland in the morning!

For the UK as a whole, not regionally. No-one knows yet before the Met Office collates the data for the full month but at the moment it appears April could be the wettest on record. It looks like being one of the coldest Aprils ever as well.

Today's weather turned out as vile as forecast for England and Wales. The forecast didn't apply to Scotland. At the moment the temp here is 5.1C - some 12C below what is normal at my location in late April. Lashing rain and very windy.

I blame the water companies. If they hadn't put in place a hosepipe ban I would not have been running my stint of the MK marathon in the rain...

Unfortunately it looks like winter hasn't finished with us - not by a long throw. Last weekend's heavy rain and bitterly cold winds look like being repeated this coming Bank Holiday. Keep an eye on weather forecasts.

According to various models there's no sign of Spring returning in the foreseable future.

Yay!!! I have done more paddling in 3 days than in Jan/Feb and March put togeather - pity I was meant to be training for a MTB enduro!

Well, at the moment the bank holiday looks as though it won't be as wild as last weekend, but every bit as cold. The cold front sinking down from the North has some very cold air behind it. There are a couple of troughs embedded in the flow so looks as though there'll be something falling out of the sky, but whether it's liquid or frozen is anyone's guess.

To use the jargon - the 528dam thickness line is expected to be somewhere around south Scotland and north England. 528dam air is cold enough for snow at sea level. Bad news in the depths pf winter - let alone early May!!

Putting it annother way - you won't need your flip-flops, shorts and beach towels. And don't put your winter gear away - the way things are looking it'll be needed for the forseeble future.

April was extremely wet for the South of England (although Northern Ireland was below average).

Next Thursday also looks pretty wet...
