Best CHEAP junior paddles

Postby dpround » Wed Feb 29, 2012 11:19 am

I am looking at buying a bunch of cheap junior paddles for the scouts. They have to be cheap as funds are very limited. TNP do a junior paddle 602 or 603 which seems to be about £30 each. Is there any other options worth considering?

The 602.0 is a symmetric paddle and the 603.0 is asymmetric. They seem to cost about the same. The asymmetric has a slightly smaller blade and is very slightly lighter, both good things IMHO. Which would be the most appropriate choice for beginners general purpose training? I am inclined to go with the asymmetric for its smaller blade, tiny weight saving and "cooler" look - but I don't think any of these is a particularly good reason. As the kids develop in confidence I am hoping to do a bit of mild white water and a bit of gentle touring.

Many thanks

David

I am hoping to buy eight, if I can afford it! Possibly split between two sizes. (The scouts vary between about 1.4 and 1.6m tall)

All the best

I think I would prefer to get junior size paddles Mark, though short WW adult paddles might be OK. What length paddles do you have?

All the best

I probably do have eight, I will check tonight, they are located in North Yorkshire but near to the M6. I think £10 a pair is a fair price.

Thanks

Thanks Yew, but I am really looking for much shorter paddles for Junior use. Probably more like 180 - 190cm rather than 220cm +

Many thanks

Sea Kayaking UK / Lendal were very generous to a local scout troop and so we have a range of Gremlins in 170 - 200cm with 45 degree feather. So far the sizes and feather seem a pretty good match for the kids. Nobody has asked for a left hand paddle and I haven't mentioned they exist, so seem to have got away with that. Now all I have to do it get through my level 2 before the scouts get bored with the silly pond that is all I am allowed to use right now!

Thanks for the help and advise

Cool. A pond, like Glenmore Lodge, can be used for the Cross Stream Challenge which can keep kids busy.
