The best kayaking events....

Postby Tom_Laws » Thu Mar 01, 2012 3:12 pm

.... have guaranteed water

.... have demo boats by the bucket-load

.... hope for warm temperatures and sunny skies

.... have a band and a bar in the evening

.... have a hog-roast

What else makes for a rocking event? Organised competitions? Coaching? Celebrity appearances?

I think fun competitions are good, along the lines of the 8 ball boater cross, but maybe with different levels of races for different abilities so everyone can be included, not everybody wants a ducky in their face

Yes to the above and if someone is giving a lecture/talk/chat etc then somewhere away from the bar.

A raffle for "good local cause (mountain rescue?)" with the demonstrators freebies and blagged prizes.

Other great events, the Valdølla Summer Games in Norway, the original Lofer Rodeo was the classic meeting point event for paddlers, a competition, but a world class section downstream and great beer drinking, the event to emulate, which is of course what both the Valsesia & Sjoa River Festivals are about.

I have never been to NSR, but I understand a lot of people like it and come back year after year, even when their student days are over.

I only ask as I am in the process of putting together a little summer thing, you can't release a book without a "folking" good do.

That in itself Cheddar boy is of mild concern, most folk events at attended by middle aged gents with more hair on their face than on their head, a but like an open canoe meet. Is there much new fair for them in the new publication? If so you're on to a winner.

The new book is fun for all the family for certain sure. :-)

After a sample from a certain player at Riverssource I'm convinced, everyone loves a singalong!

Ahh like the old days of Silz Rodeo, and it's hand rolling competitions, with finals counted by the amount of shots done every third roll.....

The 1000+ cumec floods of last May, stranded the sauna hut at the start eddy. Normally the river runs as 100-200 cumecs. And looks like this:

Yes, the Sjoa Normal section, the local boys were on there. The Åmot section, has not been down above 250cumecs though.

......are still to come.

Simon seems to be doing good stuff with the Dart stuff. Pyranha Fest is good, Teifi and Tyne Tours, South West Boat Show, nice work AS Watersports!

I'm looking forward to http://www.deeriverfestival.co.uk later this month. It helps if its local, which it is for me.

Funny - I was just about to mention the same thing! I'd say the best kayaking events... have an epic lecture battle and an attainment race up the river. The Dee River Festival 2012's running at Mile End Mill on 23-25 March.

Judging/helping out at NSR is deffo on the list of things everyone should do. I saw some photos of this years event and the "Old school Rodeo" looked pure class. It is probably the best expedition preparation you can do: Zero sleep, no washing, limited food, lots of carrying boats, lots of carnage, plenty of mad chases up and down the bank, brief spurts of frantic paddling and loads of beat downs, exposure to different culture, exotic dress, group rituals ...
