Which reminds me -- I'm supposed to be teaching sailing, kayaking and canoeing every day this week on a lake that looks like a flatter version of the same thing.
Oh what fun......

I once had a Finhorn experience very similar to that, Scotland can be very cold, but the pubs are warm and people are ace.

Findhorn was in a similar state:

Some of the most amusing paddling I've done in quite some time. You definitely get out what you put in.

Top photo is the Carron gorge, Easteross (Easter Ross?)

Second one is the Findhorn gorge.

Great fun.

It was a great deal of fun, but I think Laurent and I could have done without the nasty ice pin just further up from this, eurgh...

Whats the throwline for on the front of the boat? Is it to stop the boat going under the ice when the water ices over again?

To coax the boat over the lip - the rest of us just opted for a good shove...

yeah, you can't quite tell in the photo, but there's a nice hole in the iced over drop that was perfectly sized for the nose of the boat.

Bah, The line drag was far superior to the river/ice right line.

After running this section once we did make the brilliant decision to take two duos down the rest of the river.

It did not start off well

Twas quite painful at points.

There was a fair bit of ice walking

And also the famous last words

"I've seen a boat get pinch pinned here before, but that will never happen today."

It was a good day and the Findhorn was equally good/frozen the next day.

Good effort, nice photos, but some people need to learn when to give paddling a miss.

Some of us did give it a miss - myself and Steve (+ a couple of others) were the photographers!

Has been a brilliant week up north - the people who headed home early 'because there was no water' were looking in the wrong places. There wasn't a lot, but we still got in 2 sections most days. Awesome fun.
What is it that it is that you are doing?

Errr.... Right you are.....!!

Actually I loved this pic. I've been out today teaching canoeing in the ice and congratulating myself that I was unlikely to copy this exploit....

Normally I have to get out of my boat and walk to the river at the bottom but not Sunday wahay.

A good effort there!!
We went and did some ice paddling on the mighty Exe on Wednesday, but top marks for going out for a bit of an adventure!!

Although playboating in the hole at the bottom of trews and going over really wasnt warm...
