Etive River Race

Postby james fleming » Tue Feb 12, 2008 10:10 pm

As mentioned in another thread here are some of my thoughts on such an event.

Go to www.planetpaddler.com and click on the Etive River Race button. Or click here.

It's an idea.

That said I have contacted various persons that are key to such an event.

More information to follow.

Excellent idea. Am sure that some of from Napier will be around to take part / help with safety.

James is a kind, considerate, understanding(not to mention devilishly good looking) young man, and I'm sure he won't make everyone do their 5* before the race- I for one don't even have my 1* or any intention of taking it but am sure this won't matter too much. Ultimatley if people do find a way of getting into the race without being any good they will be the one's getting a spanking and looking like a tw** in front of everyone and getting hurt.

BTW- me and Dom are gonna kick y'all asses!

The wee snowball of an idea, on Sunday, has started to gather momentum.

This has been done before, as the information is coming through would indicate, but nothing formally arranged.

I have had offers from a number of areas, ranging from training, equipment and advice. Lots of people keen on the idea.

NTS have been formally approached and I’ll be having a chat with one of the Rangers for that area today. Might pop into Glen Etive Ski Centre tomorrow and approach them.

Any comment suggestion good, bad or indifferent, please feel free to comment.

More information towards the end of the week.

God luck James, and good effort for taking an idea and trying to make it reality. I really hope you manage to get all the permissions etc... If it all comes together then I will certainly be in attendance.

James,

if you need any help just ask. I have to admit that the moment u mentioned ur time for the etive and added to the glasgow uni boys attempts the idea of a red bull finish line at the top of right angle popped to mind. this would be a magic event.

Thanks for all the big ups.

I wasn't sure how this would go down.

Rest assured there are people, working behind the scenes, testing the water to such an event.

Like the last time, I think we are all excited about the idea.

However, do get in touch with Farq to find out all the lessons they learned last time. I'm sure it doesn't all need to be exposed on here but they can probably give you some tips to avoid some serious grief.

Your insurance cover is going to be key, for that you are almost certainly going to need to do risk assessments and work out the legal status of everyone that helps out on the day with respect to your liability for their actions, or for anything that might happen to them. I say this based on some discussions around the organsation of kite buggy race events - the different insurers have wildly different requirements, unfortunately it continues to split the sport as there are multiple organisations running events each with different insures and therefore demanding different insurance for competitors! At least in kayaking the BCU/SCA insurance is the one most people are likely to have personally, which should help when trying to get your own cover as organisers.

Hi mate!

Love the idea but surely the finish HAS to be Right Angle (as Rikhensman said) otherwise the race finish is definately anticlimactic...think of the pics man!

I take it yer planning a competitors shuttle from Glen Coe along the AJ weekend kind of idea. Also, no cover at letterbox? Yeah, it's piss easy BUT I have seen more than one botched line resulting in a rock/face combo move on the river left bank.

Good luck anyhoo,

Gary F

Hi Gary,

There will be cover at letterbox, maybe he has just missed it from his draft. I think 2 man saftey was discussed.

I'm more than willing to throw in my tuppence worth, but I'm not sure how useful it will be given that our Xtreme event was 7 years ago (eek - not sure I realised that before!!). It's been so long that I don't think we have records of who we used for insurance (which would probably be the only useful contribution we could still make).

I'll pass the link onto John who went on to organise bigger and better (non-boating) events after the Xtreme and see if he can make any suggestions.

Most of the problems we faced are documented on that playak link, but any more questions please feel free.

I think you already have a huge advantage over us with the popularity of this website. By developing the event in consultation with and the support of people on here, I'm sure you will have far fewer problems than we had.

Good luck.

PS On the red bull finish comment - they were really really helpful with us supplying us with cash, advice and red bull :-)

Only a million times less gnarly. Still, I think a hand paddling event would be a good (well, entertaining to watch) idea.

I like the idea, but don't have my 5 star!

Is this pre-requisite a realistic expectation?

That's my thoughts too. Unfortunately though in this day and age someone must be responsible. We don't have any accidents any more, its always someone's fault. It will have been decided to be 5* and above in order to be covered by some sort of liability insurance or something.

The prerequisite of 5 Star will be mandatory, at this stage of organising the event.

However, there is facility where those paddlers that want to take part and do not have their five star can ask an established five star or coach four to verify your ability.

This is a control measure to demonstrate that people have the minimum skills to paddle such a river.

The race is targeted for the intermediate / advanced paddler and not those that have limited skills or experience on such rivers.

What if you could provide other evidence of skill level such as a video?

Although thinking about it, it could be a video of anyone, unless you have a shot of your face.

Think I might have answered my own question.
