Re: Damaged Weir on river Doon (ayrshire)
Further to this morning's post, I now have a bit more info on the damaged weir on the Doon.
The weir known as Alloway Mill or Doonside Weir has collapsed & is in a very dangerous state. This weir is about half a mile upstream from the Brig O’ Doon & it is the first weir below Auchendrane.
There are further details on the SCA website at: http://www.canoescotland.org/access/Acc ... eWest.aspx. Click on the River Doon tab.
As you will see from the photo on the website the top of the weir is still there, but the water is being channelled through a slot. We understand that one paddler went into this slot upside down, with his boat & paddles getting pinned. Fortunately, the paddler got out of his boat safely, but it highlights the current dangers on this weir.

Re: Damaged Weir on river Doon (ayrshire)
Hi,
There have been a few changes since the above post. It looks as though there has been someone or group in there and made it safer.
We had a river intro group down there last week at good high levels. I got them to portage the broken weir. One thing I noticed is that the large pool above the weir is now lower because the weir breaking has lowered the levels of the above pool. Kyle Kayak Club use the River Doon alot for river intro skill progress in new people to paddling. It'll take a few good high water levels to clear any debris. Who knows if the weir will collapse more with flood levels.
