Anyone paddled this stretch of river or know of any access restrictions or problems. Im stopping down near there sometime in the summer and wanting to bring my yak for a paddle. Any info greatly appreciated

There is access from a layby at Crew Green bridge (the most popular point is upstream of the bridge river left). It may be possible to access Afon Vyrnwy from the campsite in Melverley (check with the owners) which is a short way upstream from the confluence with Afon Hafren - River Severn. There is some info on launching/landing points, with distances here.
