Middle Conwy Take Out....

Don't want to end up here?

The take out is on a straighter, flatter section of river. Several white and high vis things hanging in trees, a couple of white posts and a blind corner... It looks a bit like this (but less blurry)

Does anyone know what level the marker on the A5 bridge was at when these 2 pics were taken?

Many thanks, might venture down a bit further next time and avoid Mr Williams!

Hi. Bashful here.

That's my boat. I took a swim above the last grade 5 before the Falls and didn't want to follow it too closely as it decided to inspect the rocks below on its own.

If the water levels change enough to loosen it before it knocks itself to pieces - and it turns up on the bank somewhere, I'd appreciate it if someone could let me know. I can then come (from Coventry) to pick it up. (Inazone 232 - phone no and name should still be visible inside.)

Btw, Jules, the water level was at 6 on the gauge up by the A5.

Oh yes great idea lets take the risk out of paddling, when are you going to put foam padding on the rocks to stop people hurting themselves when they slip over. Next there will be an attendant on top of every drop in the country warning people of the danger.
Kayaking is risky always will be thats the point, yes make people aware of the drop in guides and through this site and others but dont start polluting the outdoors with high vis shit shifts the blame from the paddlers to who put it up. On the next drop some one gets hurt they will say where was the sign saying dont go past this point.
I could go on, but have to go and install a fist aid kit at the bottom of the etive for the next bleeding paddler.

I think this is a slippery slope we want to avoid going down.

After all the attention this particular section has got, it appears mistakes are still being made. This happens all the time on rivers but in this particular example due to the nature of the grade, perhaps less able paddlers are commiting to something slightly above their abilities (and not getting away with it). Yes, a post/high vis markers are not too attractive but:

1. It could save someones life on what is now deemed a HIGH RISK section by the emergency services, I believe.
2. A small marker at the end of what is a great section of whitewater certainly wouldn't ruin my day at all.

Cheers,

Joe

Hence the photos. I didn't put all that high vis crap up, or the post, but I'm not going to take them down. I don't want a big fat sign up. Hence the photos.

Bizarely I do want a big fat sign. I'm probably in the minority but there we go. Question is, what happened to the 'poll' feature they used to have on ukrgb in olden times? Would be interesting to see how many are for and against.

I'd prefer to see a sign there too, rather than someone's chavvy underpants hanging in the trees ...

Yes paddling may be a 'risky' sport, but why does is need to be down right dangerous. The get out here is certainly something that worried me and may well put people, who would otherwise be highly capable of running the rest of the river, off from running the river at all (especially if they are leading a group down), which would be a shame.

Thanks for this post! Trying to assist people in identifying the get out is good, guidebooks are one thing, but seeing photos makes me recognise an area I am not familiar with at all.

It's a shame that some people think that the best way to learn would to have a nasty swim down something like that, I personally think the best way to learn is to be well informed in any way appropriate, even if that is a small, wooden, non polluting sign. Those who choose to ignore it, can do so. Those who choose to get out, will be thankful for the reassurance.

Just my two cents worth,

Cheers,

Roli
