Dr Hugh Mantel OBE is a retired lecturer in psychology at the John Moores University in Liverpool and an Olympic slalom coach involved with 5 Olympic Games plus many other professional sports.

British athletes picked up more medals in the Athens Olympics than they had in any Games since the Second World War. Hugh was part of the team behind the scenes that helped to make the difference on the track. In the run-up to the Games, he guided a redefinition of the coach’s role and that of the coaches’ managers, set up feedback mechanisms so that the coaches could learn how well they were doing, and grew a climate of abiding trust.

He helped Richard Fox to a canoeing gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics and has helped many of our paddlers ever since. Hugh has received over 10 special awards and honours for his work including his O.B.E presented by Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

He is a compelling speaker and will talk about the development of Slalom Canoeing in the UK, our athletes in the 2012 London Olympics and the new white water course in London.
