Our first confirmed presentation for this year's APWE:

Image
Tajikistan 2010 – Through the Eye of a Needle
Dave Burne will be taking us through the highs and lows of a recent expedition to Tajikistan where judging the water levels seems to be half the battle. Not so easy when you have to walk for 2 days to actually get view of the river…

Gene17 Adventure Paddler's Weekend 2010 - Kayak Japan Preview

Why Japan? Well the choices on the table were South America, South Africa and Japan. Japan got the vote as we could ‘easily’ take the kit on the respective airline.

Image

Ian Letton planned and organised the trip and on Friday 23rd July 2010 we landed at Narita Airport, Japan.
Ian, and been in touch with Cody Howard form Huckin Huge for any information, as they had been to Japan the year before. That, with what we saw on you tube and information from Canyons in Minakami, Japan we had very little to go on.
The year of planning was done and as we took our first few steps in Japan, the adventure was beginning.
From an easy grade IV warm up on the Tone River to the nail ripping, knuckle gouging 55 footer Inari Fall on Fox Canyon we more than met our match on the river.

As a group we would face our biggest challenge and fears on the Kyotsu River. Grade II-VI, sheer canyons, deep jungle, must run rapids, no safety set up, portages and an epic to test the core fibres of friendship we were physically and mentally tested to resolve saving our fellow paddler…

Japan was evermore the adventure we had planned.
Come and see the short film at the APWE and see us paddling on the Tone, Fukawari, Kyotsu, Yamanashi and the big 55 footer Inari Falls.

Giles Chater, James Fleming & Ian Letton

It is a great weekend, year after year. Always been lucky with water (surf once), but the mountain biking is a good alternate.

Can anyone come to the evening?

I have non-paddling relatives who would like to come to the Saturday evening?

Is this allowed? Do they need tickets?

Cheers,

Ian

Although it's looking cold & dry across the country at mo, the metoffice still gives hope with their forecast for the Gene17 weekend:
However, there is then also a chance that southern and southwestern areas may turn a little less cold but also more unsettled as rain, sleet and snow tries to push up from the south.

Wild Water Film by Anson Fogel

Image

A sneak peak at our final segment for WildWater, filmed on a record high, very big North Fork in June 2010.

North Fork Payette Teaser on Vimeo

WildWater is a journey into the mind and soul of whitewater, into the places only river runners can go, places of discovery, solitude and risk. Its a visually stunning feast for the senses, and an expedition into new ideas. We set out to create a new kind of adventure film. One where image, sound and ideas trump all else. We wanted to communicate the essence of the thing we love - wildness and whitewater - and put its soul on film. A tall order. After thousands of hours of effort in around the world and in our studio, we are now editing the full version of a film we call WildWater, and we have achieved much of the goal. Borrowing Hollywood film tools and techniques, including RED digital cinema cameras and high speed film, WildWater brings not only new perspectives, but new images to kayaking and the world of adventure cinema.

The film focuses on a handful of people who share a deep passion for wild places, rivers and running whitewater. We meet Rod Nash, the wise elder of the river and one of the founders of the wilderness movement in the USA, while he is rowing the Grand Canyon once more at age 72. We meet Doug Ammons, author of the book Whitewater Philosophy and one of Outside Magazines Greatest Adventurers of the last 100 years. And we hear from the current generation of men and women, sharing their love of this shared experience. The result crosses beyond generational and experiential boundaries, even beyond whitewater, to look at the soul of adventure sports and what they mean to all of us as a practice that is about far more than just fun.

A little update from James Fleming who'll be presenting Kayak Japan this Saturday night:

"Ian and Giles will not be coming. The weather is still bad. Very bad! I never made it to work, this morning it too me 4 hours to drive some 40 miles. Bridges shut, airport shut and minus 25 is on the cards for Thursday night!

I'll be leaving Friday and I'll see you, by hook or crook on Saturday. Shovel, sleeping bag, food, drinks etc will be in the car...

The show must go on!"

Cheers James, and just may be you'll be rewarded with some Dartmoor fun on Sunday
