Struer Ranger K1

Postby jonrb » Mon Jun 11, 2012 1:09 pm

I’ve recently acquires a Struer Ranger K1, which having removed a thick layer of dust appears to be in almost perfect condition. Unfortunately, there is a small area of veneer on the deck which has lifted at the bow and may need replacing. Does anyone here have experience of working with these boats? – where can I obtain veneer? and what is the correct adhesive and varnish to use. Any advice or info appreciated. Thanks. Jon

Hi Jon
The best person to ask wil be Mark Gees http://gees-england.co.uk/, He repaired my Struer Regina a few years back. although I doubt that he will be willing to get the paddle moulds out of the roof to solve your other question.

Thanks for the suggestion James. I'll make some enquiries re cost etc, but I'm hoping to do the repair myself with the help of a cabinet maker friend. Cheers, Jon

Hi, I bought some veneer from these people a few years back. Can't help with the "how to fix" though.

Thanks Martin,

I'll make some enquiries - not even sure what the wood is, but I have emailed Struer themselves, so hope to have a bit more info to go on.
Cheers

Hi Jon,

Most likely the answer will be epoxy. A few years ago I had an old Cleaver X with some damage to the nose. At first I wanted to repair it with veneer (mahogani) etc. but ended up with building a new nose-edge with epoxy. I carefully sanded (actually, filed) everything into shape and finally used a very thin swipe of varnish (just a bit on a rag really, no brushes or anything) to make everything nice and shiny. Worked like a charm.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,
Michiel

Thanks Michiel,
Like you, I am hoping to repair with veneer - in fact I've now had a better look and all the veneer appears to be present apart from a tiny sliver which I may fill. It looks like water has penetrated under the deck joints (both sides) and has simply delaminated the veneers. I'm hoping I can inject some adhesive between the veneers and clamp in some way, with a final sand and re-lacquer. I'm keen to keep the original finish if possible. Cheers. Jon
