Suggestions for a 2-3 day Trip in SW Engalnd or S Wales

Postby Andy Wilson » Sat Apr 21, 2012 7:29 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking to do a 2 or 3 day trip with my son over the May bank holiday weekend and am looking for suggestions. We've done the Wye to death and would like to explore somewhere else, preferrably with a spot of wild camping. Up to Gd2 whitewater is fine but we don't mind if it's flat and scenic (that doesn't normally include canals in my book).

The Somerset levels look interesting (well, Ray Mears made it look interesting anyway) and the Usk from Crickhowell might be an option.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Andy

You may want to consider the Cleddau estuary above the Cleddau Bridge. Loads of paddling, but use of tides will help.

The top of the Thames can be nice, first section from Cricklade has no motor launches, great in the summer pushing through the reed beds. First camp at Lechlade, not wild but there is a decent campsite.

The Severn is an obvious choice but I've not done any extended tours on here. There is an EA guide somewhere.

Thanks Adrian, I had been looking at the Thames and found some good guides on line; I think we will probably go for that.

Cheers,

Andy
