Ideas for trips
Come on guys, the posts on this 'bit' are a bit thin and mostly about kayakers looking to paddle with one blade. Anyone got any plans for some good multi day trips for the future? As always I'm contemplating the Spey sometime but there must be a multitude of great trips in Scotland that we've never even thought about! Now's your chance, share them with the rest of us mortals and give this forum a kick start!!

The spey is a trip I have fancied doing also the Royal Dee. But I would most like to paddle some of the rivers and lakes mentioned by Bill Mason. Canada Canoeist heaven.

Have a look at the Sea Trips page of the sea site (if you've not done so alrady) - many of the "loch trips" would be good for opens - the Loch Hourne trip was done in one.

days away
Jerry,
I did Loch Hourn/Barrisdale in the summer of 05 www.ibcsl.co.uk for brief trip report.
This summer I've got Wiay and the islands in Loch Bracadale lined up for one trip, also got The Summer Isles in as a place to visit. Looking for more decent places on the west coast within a couple of hours of skye (my brothers lives there and use this as base).
Anyone know any good stretches round skye that are worth a visit? I normally do a bit of sea fishing on the boat to so let me know of any good sea fishing spots too !!!!!!
cheers

Other trips I have been thinking about - this means in the armchair with a map! are:
1.Loch Rannoch - Loch Tummel and lower Tummel
2. Balquhidder - River Larig - Loch Doine, Loch Voil, River Balvaig, loch Lubnaig.
Anyone done any of these routes?

last summer - a friend and I did the following 4 day trip
elphin - loch veyatie -climbed suilven - long drag/portage into loch sionascaig - down to the sea - right royal bolloking off posh women - 2/3 miles paddling west in the sea - then back inland up loch osgaig and to the top of loch lurgainn - read this with a road atlas and it might make sense - thumbed it back to elphin - whole trip absolutley brill apart from the posh woman.
I've been researching a route coast -to - coast in scotland - any suggestions ? - the more dragging of boat and gear through bog the better

Scottish Touring
Watch the SCA Website for the new "Scottish Canoe Touring" - they say 4000km of waters, including 11 cross Scotland routes! It is due out soon. I'll post when I spot it.
The Balquhidder - Loch Lubnaig trip may be OK, but I paddled the Balvaig in summer 2003, in a tandem and it got a bit scrapey a couple of times - if there is a reasonable amount of water, probably not too bad, though.
Oh and Standing Waves at Strathyre will rent out boats, I believe.

Canadian paddlers
[quote="Jerry Murland"]Come on guys, the posts on this 'bit' are a bit thin and mostly about kayakers looking to paddle with one blade.
Nice one Jerry. A quick bit of unsolicited abuse toward a large part of the canoe community and then a quick cover-up with a request for trip ideas.
Your first eight words were good, then you stopped making much sense.
Firstly, the majority of posts are barge (sorry, 'Traditional' Open Canoe) related.
Second, I assume you are referring to anyone who does not paddle a barge (sorry, OC). I paddle OC and decked canoe, so in your opinion am I just a kayaker?
Perhaps you would care to give us your opinion on why C1 playboaters are not canoeists but kayakers. What about sprint, slalom, white water racing and other decked Canadians? I'd also be interested in what you feel makes a canoe or a kayak.
Don't feel too bad, it is the BCU's opinion as well. Predjudice is clearly acceptable. Personally I think all single bladed paddling equal. Please tell me why I'm wrong.
At least this topic will get more posts, even if some are from single bladed kayakers.

Sionascaig / Osgaig
Catford,
In the route you describe near Suilven, what are the sections from Loch Sionascaig to the sea and from the sea to Loch Osgaig like?

Eric - from Loch Sionascraig to the sea is abit of a slog - we dragged our boat and gear with ropes most of the first steep bit - approx 2km - over moorland type terrain - the last 1km to the sea is beautiful coastal flat water - this is where we met the owner of a nearby lodge - who wasn't best pleased - we were polite, but carried on.
From the sea up into loch Osgaig, is alot more straight forward - maybe a portage of 0.5 km.
The whole trip has fantastic - I would recommend it to anyone who likes a bit of adventure....
if you need anymore info you can e-mail me on

Talk about a can of worms!
I have to say I have always had a little difficulty with the concept of someone taking a kayak, ripping out the seat, inserting a foam block, paddling it with a canoe paddle and describing themselves as a canoeist.
As someone aptly put on an earlier thread, the boat must be defined by itself not by the paddle you use to propel it.
And before you all gang up on me I paddle kayak and canoe. The kayak is less than 8' and I tuck my legs inside, the canoe is 15' and the top is all open to the elements.
