Hi
I'm looking to do an old school canoe camping trip, 2.5 days paddling 2 nights camping.
Canoe down the River Wye and Tarp or Camp on 'beaches'/islands.
What are you thoughts?
Has anyone done this before? Have you encountered any problems.

You can camp at the YHA hostle in Welsh Bicknor:

Direct access to the river. We stayed at the hostle when we went, paddled down from Ross-on_Wye, stayed the night and then paddles on to Symonds Yat next day.

There's a campsite just below Symonds Yat (Bibblins or something maybe?) which is nice. I once did a trip further upriver where we camped overnight in a field (think it belonged to one of the hire centres?), where we used a tarp over three boats with a paddle in the middle which made a pretty cool tent.

depending on your ability....
start at glasbury or hay paddle to Bycross farm campsite camp/bivi there. nice orchard so you can set hammoocks/bivi up easily and there is showers and toilets. they also let you have camp fires. the campsite is based on the corner at monnington falls.
next day paddle down to either holme lacy or hoarwithy, camp site there at both. (holme lacy a bit more commercial, caravans etc)
then paddle down to Ross to finish
if river levels are low then there are plenty of places to bivi out on the river banks, great river for summer time canoe camping but can get very busy on summer weekends.

Isn't Biblins a "youth" campsite? I have a feeling that adult-only groups are not accepted there......
And the river goes down to the sea

this is correct, but we have used it for youth workers doing a BELA course in the past.... id imagine it would be a no-go for what you are thinking

If this is an "adult" trip you can camp at Symonds Yat East above the rapids ... which has the Saracens Head pub conveniently close!

Thanks for the replies, we're heading from Ross to Monmouth. Wild camping on the way down, as the levels are low...
