Clubs for SWWC

Postby girly paddler » Mon Mar 08, 2010 7:41 pm

I have finally sold my green boat and bought a little red one. Its a SWWC and I thought I'd be able to paddle all these fun little technical rivers where my trad was limiting me.
Problem is, now I have it I find its a bit harder to paddle than I thought it would be!
I'd like to learn to roll it - and paddling in a straight line would also be good - but noone knows what to do with it.
Are there any clubs? I'm at my wits end!! I've asked about pool sessions but its always too big!
I'm in Worcestershire if that helps.....

Best wishes,
Katie

Katie, check out the song of the paddle forum, there is a meet at Washburn soon, and another at the Tryweryn, both in April. The guys and girls there are an excellent bunch, and KelvinH is also a coach, so you might want to consider having a chat with him. His website is www.kelvinhornercoaching.co.uk

Look on cboats.net as well, there is a video of a reasonable roll posted which you can find here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soYyDOc7Ovs

If you find the post (on the cboats video forum bit), you'll see the critique. This isnt an ideal roll, but it's not bad, it gets the guy up after all. Most users of cboats are american but don't let it put you off. Us UK lot tend to post more on the sotp forum than here.

Thanks Mike.

I know about Kelvin - he is an excellent coach but I am not currently looking for coaching.

I am looking for some friendly people for paddling some play spots (and gnarly rivers!) with. My friends paddle trads and the portage back up the Symonds Yat rapids with one of those is a killer!!! I have been badgering my friends to paddle their kayaks - or buy a spec boat - but they have been treating my remarks with some distain!!

Yes, I like CBoats - they are a pretty inspirational and helpful bunch on there.

Come to the Tryweryn then. It's looking like April 10/11. There are no swcc "clubs" as such, just a bunch of like minded paddlers from all over the UK who meet now and again.

Hi Katie,

All good advice there. There's also pretty keen group of open boaters up at Leicester PaddlePlus Club too. http://www.paddleplus.co.uk/

This might also be of help

I met you guys at Darley Bridge - paddled down the river to Matlock with you!

I see you have a few meets in north wales - I am sure I am working but will keep an eye out for stuff.....wrong side of the country tho'....I really like your link on rolling a SWWC....I've not tried it yet but will get out and give it a go.

Cheers

SOAK (Stratford on Avon Kayaks) have a couple of flys and C1s for pool use and some SWWC paddlers. Your quite welcome to come along and we can try and get you rolling, we meet at the Stratford Leisure centre on Tuesday nights ... We are also going to the Tryweryn bash.
Cheers

Ok, thanks Trevor - I'll bear that in mind. A couple of people have offered to give me a bit of help since I posted so I'll see how that goes. Are you on the internet? I contacted a few clubs quite a while ago but got no response.

Hi Katie,

Just popped a bit of rolling footage together for you. I'll film some better stuff soon with some tips.

The great god of IT has decreed that I am not to watch your video!!

Ah well, as I have the co-ordination of an upside-down disorientated beetle I'm sure it won't help. I'm going to try the set-up etc on the lounge floor with a short paddle. Maybe it will make sense maybe not?

This is a great video...very useful slowmo. Your videos are very informative (the one about eddy turns really show edging well).

If you're looking for a club near you then Wyedean shouldnt be too far away? and we paddle Symonds Yat rapids regulary on thursday nights in the summer...wyedeancanoeclub.co.uk

Unfourtunately there is only two C-boaters in the club, me being the most recent (still just starting off).

Hey Nick, I and a friend also have spec boats......he just gave in to all the ear-bashing and has agreed to borrow one!!

I am based in North Worcestershire - give me a yell if you want to get us all together. No doubt you have the same hilarity that my friend has when he's watching me......Also good to get more together for the 'downstream back-up'......

Hi,

I'm based matlock way so if you're ever up this way drop me a PM...although there's so little water at the moment you can almost wade across in your wellies!

What WWC do you paddle, just curious, since it's interesting to see what other women are paddling.

Maybe see you on the water sometime...
