Need to put a vinyl patch D ring back into the boat after accidentally chiselling it out with a paddle the other day.
Do I really need to spend the next six hours of my life picking off every little tiny bit of the the old glue or can I just slop impact adhesive over the top and go as usual?

I wouldn't worry too much about actually removing all the old glue, but I would sand the surface flat. Otherwise the patch would only stick to the "points" and would soon fail.
But it isn't going to take hours - 10 - 15 mins tops

Recommended procedure for impact adhesive to boats is to apply impact adhesive to the boat and let it go solid - maybe a day or two. Then apply a new layer of adhesive to both surfaces, let it go tacky in the usual way, and stick together.

Cheers. Have heard that before but forgot about it.

There are issues with the materials. For a polythene boat, you should use impact adhesive as described above. Follow manufacturer’s recommendations. For Royalex boats use vinyl adhesive but make sure the glue on both the boat and patch are dry before applying the D-ring. If it is still tacky or wet it will continue to dissolve the plastic. I use a hair drier to make sure it is dry but this also helps with adhesion.
