I hope not, the last thing we need is open boaters to start ransacking our failing natural environment for the sake of playing at survival.

I have just returned form canoeing Loch Ba (Rannock moor) and associated lochs. There are several idylic islands with trees (out of reach of the deer), but many show signs of axe and saw. It is just not on. These are very precious trees and they support many life forms in these isolated and unique places. Clearly the damage is being done by paddlers, who in addition to this folly, are now (as always??) leaving huge amounts of rubbish. I cleared one wild campsite of a large bin liners worth of bottles and plastic. Shortly afterwards I arrived on another island to find rubbish piled up that would not have fitted into three 17' canoes. I had to leave it. This island was pure magic except for the rubbish.

Just what is going on here?

What is needed are courses on clean camping, not 'lets pretend we are in the Canadian wilderness'.

I hope that more do - I have been on a course with these guys and I felt they had a better level of respect, knowledge and understanding of the natural environment than most and it was not all about playing at survival.

I agree needlessly cutting down trees and leaving litter is a poor show and not on.

On completion of the course I did we had to do exactly this, even to the extent of picking up our fires ashes and distributing them safely far and wide - you would never have known we were there.

I believe this type of course would be beneficial to us all and its great fun aswell
